Simply because more are being used year on year - of course the numbers are going to go up.

6 times as many scooters available in 2021 alone according to the above.

Interesting that all the fatalities were e-scooter riders.

Suspect head injuries were probably involved in all 9. Skull —> concrete at 15 mph will cause some amount of damage.

I suppose much like cycle riders being the predominant victims in cycle accidents.

So possibly, they do other people little harm, unlike bad driving which does a great deal of harm to others and their property, but drivers are still going to pile on cyclists and e-scooters while arguing they themselves should be able to interprete law and HC as they see fit. smile

If you ride one without a helmet you're an idiot. I always wear one. Mind you, you're an idiot if yu ride a bike without one too.

I think that YouTuber girls head injury was caused by an hgv driving over it.

Cycle helmets aren't designed to protect in collisions with vehicles.

You're an idiot if you walk down the street without one.
You're an idiot if you get in a car without one.
You're an idiot if you get out of bed without one.

That should just about cover it.

Having had my head hit concrete both, and without a helmet, I choose a helmet and am fully aware a plastic and polystyrene hat wont protect me from 40 ton HGVs etc, but if I have the front wheel wash out on diesel or just come off then it may help.

Really intrigued by these E Scooters, but, as usual pond dwellers are busily ruining their perception, could be a fantastic option for personal mobility but cant see it happening because someone might use it improperly. Trouble is, those who dont care about legality are already at it, those who do are holding off.

Thought there would be more about in London this summer but I'm only seeing one or two privately owned e-scooters per day, looks like the law abiding public are generally getting the message about private e-scooter use leaving just the lawless who are likely also committing other crimes at the same time.

Recently in the news there have been two high profile deaths involving e-scooters, one a youth killing an older pedestrian and the other a female using a Voi hire scooter in Northampton which brings the total deaths involving hire scooters in Northampton during the trial period to two.

I am intrigued too but I know that if I ever get one I'll stop walking to places! So I've promised myself that I won't get one unless there becomes a pressing need. An e-hub on my towing bike might be a better idea for my needs if petrol makes driving a stupid idea.

I saw an interesting e-scooter on Laura Kampf's YouTube channel (for anyone familiar with her work), with a wider footplate and larger wheels. I'd say 14" or so. Presumably more stable and better stopping capabilities than the small wheel type.

I see very few around Guildford/Farnborough, but I was in Canterbury on Friday and saw 3 or 4 while just walking to and from an event in the pedestrianised centre, plus several illegal e-bikes (being ridden without pedalling).

edit: Oh just googled and it seems Canterbury is a trial area, so they were probably legal ones! Obv. the bikes were not legal though.

Wearing one in bed is a must, sleep walking and falling down the stairs will always end badly.
Wearing one on the loo is also imperative. Falling asleep on the bog and smashing your head on the sink firkin hurts (dont ask how I know)...

That these things are still not legal for private use is getting beyond a joke.

The government passed all kinds of laws 'because Covid', but it seems they don't want to pass anything 'because fuel costs'.

Though with all the money pissed up the wall I shouldn't be surprised the government won't give us a break.
