E Scooters soon to be allowed on UK roads?

Maybe that's how it started. Control of property, restricted to safe spaces.
First they came for the shopping trolleys. Unident did not resist.
Then they came for the scooters. Unident did not resist.
Then they came for our brains. Unident was left alone.
Whenever I see Niemoller misquoted like this I can’t help but think of people who have a far greater opinion of their intellect than is reflected in reality. First they came for the shopping trolleys. Unident did not resist.
Then they came for the scooters. Unident did not resist.
Then they came for our brains. Unident was left alone.
Pathetic.

The reason for rental as apposed to buy your own is quite simple.,
The rental ones are controlled by gps. You can ban them from individual streets and other exclusion areas. Total control. Via gps shutdown. Stray a metre into an excluded area and the power shuts down and the brakes apply.
You can’t do that with the ‘dumb’ ones which could be used everywhere.
Why would you want to do that with scooters, when bicycles are bigger, faster and completely unrestricted. Irrational Luddisim. The rental ones are controlled by gps. I know that the technicality exists that technically an e-scooter is a motor vehicle, whereas an e-bike merely provides assistance to pedaling, but to all intense and purposes they're very similar. indeed the e-bike is bigger, heavier and capable of higher speeds.
It's so frustrating - there's many ways I could use an e-scooter, but am nowhere near anywhere getting a rental scheme.

So much this. I don't understand, and haven't understood for a long time, why there's a disparity in law between an e-bike and an e-scooter.

There is an element of physical activity required to make an e-bike go, there isn’t on an e-scooter. It really is that simple. This is just the start of the route to them being fully legal, not the end of it. All the arms being thrown up in the air in despair as if it’s the end of the world is ridiculous. They may well be legalised further with private ownership being part of that, but this is a pilot that has strong degrees of co troll attached to it. Pilots that are run in all forms of business operate exactly the same way, nobody simply rolls something untested out in full without checking the viability first.

Yes, I realise that, but the end result of your physical activity/ motor combo on an e-bike and your purely motorised activity on an e-scooter is remarkably similar.unident said:

I'm just not entirely sure why we need a pilot. There's plenty of other countries where e-scooters are legal to look at and come to a decision. It's not like they're an unknown new technology. Other countries have essentially done the testing for us.I'm also rather more pessimistic than you about the end of the 'journey of legalisation.' I can very much see the end result being rental scooter schemes being legalised, but private ones remaining illegal.

Other countries tend to be very different to us for all sorts of reasons. The Dutch have pretty much legalised some drugs, Portugal have decriminalised the lot. Hungary reckon it’s OK to shag a 12 year old. Not sure I’d say they’ve done the legwork so we should just adopt it. I know that’s extreme, but it is better that we test stuff in our culture, with our road, cycle way and footpath network. You might be pessimistic about the end of the journey, I’m not. However, better that the rental companies take the hit financially than Joe Public if they are ruled against in time.
Is there a consistency of what’s legal in each country in Europe anyway?
Oh st, we are back in Unident's effort world.
There's a photo of escooters on the previous page that I assume attempts to show the type of scooter that will be rented. Those are "kick scooters". They don't assist until you are over 2mph. Does that fulfill the effort requirement?
From my own experience, once you hit the magical 2mph it will do everything on the flat even if you drop to less than 2mph. Its only if you stop that you have to push it to 2mph. But, due to my fat ass, I will give it a helping hand up hills. This is starting to sound the same as ebikes!
Where I live, the police just laugh at a 20st man on a scooter

No we’re back in your “struggling to understand what’s being discussed” world. The photos were to show the type of scooter that’s being legalised and the type that’s not. The discussion had drifted in to the realms of proper motorbike type scooters somehow and people were starting to talk as if they were going to be getting on an electric Vespa for some reason. I previously gave you the benefit of the doubt by assuming you were an immature child. Someone that hasn’t had the chance to learn how the real world works. Unfortunately, the evidence shows you are just immature and continue to talk instead of listen. Stop spamming piston heads and go troll where ever you came from. You are not the genius you think you are and just come across as the person we could ignore at the bar. The one we didn’t invite out but some how found out and turned up.

I don’t think it is. Both come with risks, but with cycling it’s known that the benefits from the exercise outweigh the risks by a really considerable amount. That won’t apply with the scooters.
E bikes don't require a lot of excercise. Are they bad as well? I tend to do very long distances on the lower setting, so they can give you a lot of exercise.
If I had it on the highest setting riding 3 miles each way, it wouldn't do a huge amount.

Ta, I know someone who has one, but that needs no effort at all. I suspect its been adjusted...I tend to do very long distances on the lower setting, so they can give you a lot of exercise.

Debating with him is akin to playing chess with a pigeon.
Well that didn’t take long did it. Great start, could have been worse I suppose. Some poor sap could have mowed them down and then had to live with the consequences.
