I'm not expecting anything at all to be done about our tiny loss but should there have been lots of other people reporting similar, or someone experiencing a major item go missing then perhaps someone might have a word with the Dealership.

To be honest, even after reporting to the Service Manager I'm not even expecting to hear from the Dealership again, even a letter to say sorry; but if everyone does nothing and no-one informs either the Dealership or perhaps the Police then the thefts will continue, perhaps not pennies but anything that is easy to pocket, nice sunglasses, nice pen and thieves become emboldened and make off with something of a higher value.
Do you realise that when they test drive your car after a service, they’re actually stealing your fuel yikes

They shouldn't 'get away with it', but a proportional response would be appropriate, wouldn't it? Personally I'd work on the basis that the matter hasn't been raised with the dealer principle previously, so that would probably be a good place to start.

£5 isn't it. £2 iInitially and the £3 that was planted.

Still a thief no matter how you want to dress it up.

I feel like this might be trolling...

Nobody could seriously contact the Police over a £3 having gone missing.
Its a lack of trust, which although an Insignificant amount is still worth reporting just in case other incidents have happened at that dealership. Would you be happy for a plumber or electrician to steal loose change from every house they visit. Why should a spanner get away with it in your car ?
Theft is theft. Whoever is stealing the money will keep going until caught.

Possibly the perpetrator needs a good dressing down, perhaps he should go to jail.

I had a bloke stealing out of the till, only 10 pounds, should I have said OK? Hopefully he learnt from being sacked.

Some people learn from their mistakes, some don't.

The op is, perhaps unsurprisingly on here, getting a bit of stick from some posters.

However - it is dishonest and it is theft. It is irrelevsnt how much has gone missing.
I'd be pissed off too.

I'd hold off reporting to the police at the moment. See how you get on with the dealer. Take it from there.

And if he does not call you then call him.

Whoever stole the money needs sacking. No ifs and no buts. Whether the offender can be identified is another matter.

OP, you can log many small crimes online. They probably won't investigate, but the stats help them prioritise resources.

But it isn't just £3 is it?
As OP says it adds up. It is the principle. it's petty theft. If they give so little a st about your property, that they nick what they think you wont notice, how well are they really looking after your car?
It's not police matter, but I would never go back to them if it were me. Dishonesty is dishonesty.

I know it’s only £3 but a £3 bet with really long odds could turn into £100, which rounded up to the nearest thousand is a lot of money to lose.

Joking aside, if you’re certain and have evidence - then report it, otherwise write it off as a latte that you dropped after buying it.

Unless the DP is a criminal, I’d expect him/her to be very interested in getting to the bottom of this. Thieving staff will ruin a good reputation very quickly.

Thank you to the posters who like me see the principle of the theft; I think I'll hold off and see if the head honcho gets in touch then think again about it.

For information, the Service Manager was almost immediately talking about rigging a car with cameras so perhaps it is the case that others have reported thefts and he realises it's time to do something as it's perhaps getting out of hand.

As to someone getting sacked, I doubt anyone will or could get caught unless they were caught by someone over their shoulder or by a camera set-up.

It does seem some posters are perfectly happy with petty crime, perhaps even with bigger thefts too...

We had the exact same thing happen when the car was in for a service.

A few pounds taken, I emailed the service manager, he obviously apologised, offered to donate the same amount to charity and had a word with his staff.

It's not worthy of Police time, but you would hope the management at the dealer would keep an eye out for this now they are aware and can hopefully deal with the thief suitably.

Which was it? I’d get my story straight before going to the Police.
the explanation is right there if you read it.
£2 was thought to have gone on the first visit
£3 was missing on the second

I've seen on Reddit customers doing 'honesty tests' hiding sums of money in the car, one in the obd port cap!

I can almost guarantee they are 'Karens' who will kick off and blog about how they were ripped off etc if someone goes for it.

In your example it's best dealt with through a complaint as you have done.

I would be pissed if they took a dead air freshener.

It has nothing to do with what they took and everything to do with the fact they took something.

In his example he would have been best off to not purposely leave money in the car the next day to give himself a crusade to go on.

You read on these forums how people get cars and bikes stolen and the police don't even turn up, you get a crime number over the phone and that's your lot. I'm sure they'd be all over this case. OP, you best not use your car again, it's a crime scene now.

He can do what he likes, especially if it helps catch a thief. People shouldn't steal other people's stuff. There's absolutely nothing you can say here that will change that, no matter how hard you try.

I agree but life is too short to concern yourself over £3.

I for one would have left the money in place the second time after counting, The reason being not being sure that 2 quid had disappeared would be annoying more more than it being gone. It's the I thought I had X amount there but I could have been wrong that would bug me. By counting and leaving the next batch and seeing them come up short I would in fact be relieved that I wasn't wrong in the first place - although I would probably have reduced the amount left the 2nd time to limited the losses.

The local car wash was notorious for hoovering up any spare change you happened to leave in the centre console or wherever.

I figured it was their way of earning tips, I certainly didn't tip them when they did it to me.
