If you've paid it then there's no justification at all for paying it again. Tell Daniels Silverman (the debt collectors) it's already been paid and that if they continue to harass you you'll make a formal complaint and report them to the FCA, who authorise their activities. You're then very unlikely to hear anything more from them.

All the garage can do is sue you, which they're never going to do for such a piddling amount.

However, I'm intrigued as to why DS are asking for £86.07 if you said the amount was only "between £40 and £50 ". Can you explain this?

All that'll have happened is that the cashier has rung it through using a 'repayment' button on the till, but forgotten to print a receipt copy and staple it to the no means of payment form. The manager has then sent the form off to the collections agent as he believes it's unpaid.

Therefore the back office reporting should show a repayment for that shift.

Absolutely do not pay it again.
It's more than likely an oversight from the garage, as others have suggested.
There is nothing the debt people can do about it.

Lots of shops aren't taking cash now - so it'd be a good idea to get 'up to speed' and invest in a card of some sort for payment.
It's also much less of a contamination path.

I was also confused as to why it was more than the original debt. I dont have an actual answer for that question but for the moment I'm assuming it's an additional late payment charge until I find out a better answer.

Only for the shop assistant. Very much a contamination path for customers who all have to tap in ENTER. I have not seen keypads cleaned between users.

Having said That I manage to get home without touching my face before washing my hands.

Unless you have contactless and spend under £45, then nobody needs to touch anything.

A garage in town now has one of these "agreements" similar to parking where you agree to pay £xx amount if you find you have no way to pay for the fuel, this is in addition to and regardless of whether you settle the cost of the fuel with the garage. It seems you have probably been caught by the same, as soon as the transaction is noted as unpaid combined with the ANPR it sends the info to the companies office to chase and obtain registered keepers details.

Surely the extra is the "admin charge" for the collection agency?

You don't keep a bottle of gel in the car? Tut tut.

I keep a small bottle of hand sanitiser in the armrest. Quick squirt of that before touching much else when I get in - not perfect but better than nothing. And of course wash hands at next opportunity.

Private Reminder to pay £86.07 for fuel from Newbury Extra on 20/03/2020 Car reg (removed) Please pay now by Calling 0151 222 6702 Ref B2007619 Thanks

Upon checking my emails I received an email 4 days ago
Not only do I find not carrying a card of any sort weird I'm also amazed people checking their emails is like a weekly event.
Do you not even have a smartphone? When I say smart I mean anything since Tony Blair was PM.

Emails, SMS, push, whatsapp, they all come up instantly on mine and you can deal with then as you wish.
This whole thing is quite bizarre.

You don’t need a smart phone to check emails or even hourly.

Yes I have a smart phone, no I dont check my emails very often generally. Not everyone embraces technology with open arms. I use it as much as I need to to get by. If you can help with the issue I'm having then great otherwise how I run my life is irrelevant.

My dad (74) is tech savvy - email, surfing, even powerpoints. Doesn't need or have a smart phone.

And yet here you are asking for advice, because your way of running your life has got you into a situation you don't need to be in.

Not sure, but it might be some sort of civil recovery scheme similar to that in supermarkets where they deal with the ancillary costs of your ‘offence’?

If you'd paid with a card you'd have proof, so yes it has actually.
