Morning all, looking for some advice regarding speed cameras, specifically the calibration.

My mother has received 3 fines in a week, 30 zone, flashed ranging from 41-48. Now I know everyone says no way, I'm innocent etc, but my mother is 62, district nurse (drives like miss daisy) and the camera is about 100yds from her home, been there for ever, never been flashed before.

The curious part of all this is that a local group has been set up on faceache, it's currently got 95 people done in a week, many have been flashed 5-7 times. One guy has gps proof from his works van showing 27mph, he got a ticket for 44! The calibration for the camera however shows it's been done in kmh, is this right/normal? Ties in with the speeds people say they were doing vs what their ticket says, multiple replies from the force saying it's correct, but it can't be right, can it?

Just interested to know how you know the camera is calibrated in Kmh not Mph.

Sounds peculiar, not least that the calibration would be changed to km/h ( as you say it has been there for ages and only recently have people suggested their tickets are showing km/h speeds).

Thing is though, if the camera is on km/h, is the ticket not also showing 50km/h or whatever - therefore easily provable the speed in mph is fine?

(I mean the actual camera shot itself, not the wording on the NIP)

Have they sent any photos with the NIPs, ideally a pair taken at a known time interval ?

I'm not sure, she said she just had 3 letters. I've asked her to send me a pic of the ticket she has.

It’s unlikely they will have.

You can request the images, but I’m not sure if they will be a pair as mentioned earlier. More likely a single image for each offence used for identification.

Interesting, 44 km/h is 27 mph, perhaps someone doing something daft like setting a km/h camera to 30 km/h instead of 50 km/h or whatever... Is it one with the lines painted on the road? That should help if it's genuine - if she was doing 48mph it would look very different to 48km/h (longer distance travelled between the 2 pictures)

I see it was calibrated on the 15th may, presumably all of the people on this group only started getting flashed after that date?

Ignore this nonsense. I’ve never had a case in which only one photo was provided.

Have they always been provided prior to the FPN-or-court decision point?

I am sure I have read (anecdotal, granted) instances of those asking for photos being told they would not be sent them unless they rejected the offer of a FPN and went to court.

It was replaced a while back, from the grey box style ones to one of those new yellow cameras (sorry I don't know what camera that is) mounted high up, the lines in the road were removed and replaced with little dots.

Correct, only since the end of May were people reporting problems, though with lockdown presumably there wasn't a lot of people driving about, they seem to have exploded since the middle of June.

@agtlaw - in your experience is it normal for calibration to be done in kmh? Looking on the gosafe.org site every one I can see is in mph except this one

Perhaps worth a call to the local rag - speeding is always a hot topic, as is the police doing something wrong - and it might also bring some more people out of the woodwork with other good, evidence-able, examples of it not being right.

Some police forces don’t disclose them until court proceedings are commenced. E.g. North Yorkshire.

The local paper is meeting with some of the group on Tuesday.

From the group chat the only people that have been sent pictures have all been from the front....

Why is it nonsense?

I requested a photo after being sent a FPN, and I received a 1 x photo as I disputed that it was me. I hadn’t been in the town where is was alleged.

I’m not sure why you come across as quite aggressive in your manner when replying. I Clearly stated it was more likely based on my experience. Whilst I appreciate your experience in your profession will no doubt be more valuable and accurate than mine, my experience in still valid and I thought worth posting.

This. If it's where I think it is then walesonline might well be interested!
Also if it's where I think it is then according to this its not exactly a hotspot "But two separate Cardiff cameras, on Rhiwbina Hill and Greenway Road, Rumney, were triggered just once during the year"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-15026019 (I know it's old, but more recent data may be available)
