39 years of driving, twice.
Once when I was 17 in Germany I was pulled and told to go faster or get off the Autobahn, 1300 cc Triumph Toledo, passed my test 2 months before.
Second time was a random Christmas drink driving check, I hadn't and wasn't even breathalysed.
Does getting stopped for "speeding" on a bicycle count, coming down Bannerdown into Batheaston, 43 in 30, told to take it easy!

In the mid to late 80’s I had an RS Turbo a series 1 relatively young too at 19, in the mid 90’s I purchased a new Corrado VR6 and then a new E36 M3 in 96, been stopped in the 15 to 20 times bracket not for any driving misdemeanours but purely young Asian driving a nice car. Didn’t bother me just funny watching their faces when everything checked out
The obnoxious sales manager at Peter West BMW at the time said to me “the only people who buy M3’s are either footballers or drug dealers” and you don’t look like a footballer to me... cheeky tt.

Had to google what BAME was...
Stopped less than 10 times in 25 years of driving, all were justifiable really.
One that stands out was driving North from Inverness while working on site, at 3am.
The police stopped me while I was doing 50 in a 60, they actually said ‘you’re wondering why we stopped you?’ I was sober and driving sensibly so I said yes, they replied ‘well everyone else speeds down here and you were doing 50’
I had to explain that the other three were drunk, had finally stopped singing and gone to sleep so I was trying to drive gently to avoid waking them up!

Not found stats on car stops but this one shows you are much less likely to have an interaction with the polis if you are white, not much fun to look at to be honest.

This is an interesting bit of info, what's going on in Dorset?
"London had the highest stop and search rates for all ethnic groups apart from Black (Dorset) and White (Merseyside)"

For me (white) it's 9 times that I can remember:
3 times for speeding. Points and fines.
Once for expired tax, fined.
Once for tax disc not properly displayed, was in a holder mounted on the dash rather than stuck to the screen. No action
Once for overtaking another car near a junction. No action.
Once for taking a roundabout a bit too quickly on a clear quiet Sunday morning. No action
Once for turning at a no right turn. No action
Once for a defective headlight. No action
I'm sure there are a few more because before I started writing the list I thought it was 4 or 5 times, but I kept thinking of others!
Number of times I didn't stop when asked.....zero.

Passed my test in 1987 and have been driving ever since. I drive nice cars and have a modded MX5, I'm often in and around central London. I have never been stopped other than once for speeding 25 years ago. I feel for the BAME community, I expect that if I was a member and lived exactly the same life I would have been stopped many times.
Been driving 8 years now, been pulled 5 times. First time I nearly wiped out a police car at a roundabout taking it a bit hot in my Morris minor
2nd time I had a headlight out in the morris, so we had a nice chat about the car
3rd time I was ttting about in a empty overflow car park in a mg zr courtesy car, an extremely angry man who lived a mile away called the police after attempting to assault us, nearly got an asbo for that.
4th time I was driving around a housing estate in a gold 306, trying to find someone's house, so they thought I was a drug dealer
5th time I was in my AX during a road rally and they pointed out my damaged headlight, asked me a few questions about the rally but didn't seem too bothered.
I'm in no doubt with the cars I drove and the way I drove when I was younger, and the area I grew up in I'd be pulled alot more if I was BAME, hard to know for certain as the population where I grew up wasn't exactly diverse.

Haven't done the survey, tl:dr.
Have been pulled over a good few times in my life. Only ever been pulled over when doing something wrong. In something like 9 times out of 10, I've talked my way out of it. I am white, and feel I know how to 'play the game'.
Now I'm older and slower, I never get pulled over, but I did trigger a speed camera off last year and got 3 points. Mind you, when I say slower, I still feel I never complete a journey without speeding somewhere.

No idea how many times I've been stopped but I do remember one occasion. It was back in the 80's so I wouldn't try getting away with it now!!
I was overtaking another car, I was about to pull back in when I realized there was a police man pointing a speed gun at us. No choice but to carry on, complete the overtake and pull back in. Not unsurprisingly I was stopped a few hundred yards up the road and directed into a layby, as was the car behind me. (The one I had just overtaken)
The police man came up to me and said "We know you were speeding as we've just done the car you were overtaking!! We can only monitor one car at a time and as the other car was the one we saw first it's you lucky day!!!"
I got a severe bking and was sent on my way - a very lucky escape!

When I was 21 I bought a Lancia Delta Integrale my GF was bit of wild child and used to delight at waving at the police with both hands or obviously drinking from a beer bottle from the “drivers” seat. Used get stopped a lot and one or both of us would have had some weed on us, usual stuff check documents, realise it was the passenger being a dick get told to stop being a dick and on way.
Then in my late 20s had an AMG E55 and used to visit airports often at odd times. There was times I would get stopped 2 or 3 times in one night. Never really had a problem with it, the plod were always reasonable and when given a decent explanation as to why I was driving at 3am it was over with and I was on me way.
It was only ever in the car that I was stopped, never in a sign written van.

Interesting insight into the PH demographic I'd say, judging by the range of responses...
absolutely - rough calculation suggests 95% of the responders to this poll are non-bame.28 years driving and only a few stops.
Once in my Mk1 Astra "because we thought you were going to break the speed limit" - I was, but only because your unmarked car was inches behind me, at 1am on a country road.
Once in my Ax "you're driving very slowly sir, is everything okay", followed by " I can smell alcohol"... Once I explained I was trying to get to the garage because a coolant hose was leaking and the officer realised she could smell the antifreeze, she gave me a bottle of water and sent me on my way.
Again in the AX " Odd maneuvre sir.why did you suddenly go round the roundabout and back the way you came". Explained I remembered I'd left something at my girlfriend's and was going back for it. Quick breathalyser and I was on my way.
Only stopped once since then - in my Rover 214 (bought to replace the AX after it got squashed) and they accepted my word I'd only had one glass of wine, without a breath test.
Never got stopped in the Saabs, even the one with the mahoosive stainless steel exhaust, which could be heard miles away .
So choice of car definitely helps too.

During my years of driving modified cars I got stopped a few times, generally by friendly and polite police officers who wanted check the car for defects.
I've only ever had one incident where I felt intimidated and that was driving back from a 12 car rally at 2am, being stopped and told I was exceeding the speed limit (not true), then being told if I didn't produce insurance documents they'd have the car off me. Luckily the other officer with him was a bit more interested in understanding the reason why we were driving round Bath city centre at 2am, advised me that i should carry my insurance documents in future and let us on our way, but it shook me a bit!
