Been idly watching YouTube and came across a compilation of cars crossing the Rufford Ford in Notts. I have always been under the impression that, if that plod-looking black 5 series on the motorway has a personalised plate, it isn't a copper... but skip to 1:28 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU7wg_mRc3s , and there is an apparently undercover car with blues on and numberplate 'L18 GHH'. The other thing which threw me off is that the car is MOT'd, and I thought that police cars had their own inspections and did not need an MOT.

Is this some with blues on his Audi, or has spotting an undercover just got much harder?

One of my clients sites is a workshop that fits blues and sirens to high level fire and ambulance staff vehicles.

Can be anything in there from normal Mondeos to high end BMW/Audis. I’ve seen M5’s and S7’s in getting lights in the grills etc.
More times than not it’s been senior fire staff cars. Wether than coincidence or not I don’t know but it’s never ever been Police cars as far as I know.

Those videos are strangely addictive aren’t they! So many people thinking speed is the answer to driving through deep(ish) water.

Ambulance or Fire service most likely. Personal cars fitted with kit

I'll wager fire service.

A few years ago a senior fire officer had a fixed light bar on the roof of his 307CC. Making the convertible roof totally redundant.

I saw an unmarked 307CC police car in Herts some years back - uniformed officer having a word with a driver he'd pulled over, hidden blues flashing away.

No light bar on roof, mind!

That will be a fire officers car. They usually use their own cars and fit blues on them via the fire service for call outs.

High ranking military officers travel in unmarked cars with blues though larger cars and with a driver.

You will not spot an undercover car. You certainly won't be seeing them on you tube vids.
You might spot a plain patrol car.

Yep. Huge difference between “unmarked” and “undercover”.

Mrs72 bought an ex-undercover car, surveillance apparently. Who looks at maroon Fiestas twice? It was a really good car actually, low mileage and had clearly been well maintained. The only issue being that it had been fitted with so much extra wiring (presumably for cameras) that when the headlights went out in pub car park one night, I went to change the fuse and found the fuse box made no sense whatsoever - it didn't even have the right number of fuses. Swap this one ... try it now ... OK swap this one ... try it now ... OK swap this one ... etc

Thanks all - interesting stuff. Hadn’t realised that this is how it works for senior fire staff. Only reason I immediately thought police is as, in my part of the world, almost all unmarked traffic cars are Audi A4/6s and BMW 5 series. Actually seen brand new S4 Avants on the A3/A31 behind pulled over cars.
Re the Fiesta and 307cc comments... the only surprising car that I’ve seen out of London was a blue Ford Galaxy flying down the hard shoulder with lights on. It’s inside London that everything gets scary and unpredictable... Seen various Mercedes, Range Rovers and even a Golf GTI.

The fact that you haven't seen them is the clue! Keep looking though.

Derbyshire police had a 55 plate ref focus around a couple of years or so ago, you wouldn't look twice at it and think it was police, but a good look confirmed it was.

I've also come across a crash before where the first on scene was an x reg people carrier with blue lights fitted and a policeman in uniform walking around the scene, him and me the only people there (bar the occupants of the crashed car).

That DEFINITELY caught me off guard!

Stuff like Golf's can be cars the police have had off crims they've caught if they're good enough to be used for police work.

Sorry a bit off topic, but I do love these videos.....most suprising for me is just how susceptible the taller VW Crafters / Sprinter vans are to water ingress.....admittedly they are not always driven correctly, but I'd still have expected the air intakes to be tucked under the scuttle.....but obviously not! The often get out waded by things like low slung saloons!
