I got my renewal today, and to my amazement, it’s actually gone down, and quite significantly; from £835 to £538 (same number backwards, which is a little odd). Every year before this it’s gone up a bit, and I then change my insurance company, but never to a
much cheaper premium.

I’m 26 and drive a sensible Astra. I passed my test in 2013, first car in 2014. Had a small at fault claim for a car park ding in 2018, I made no claim for my own car. I don’t live in a particularly nice area and do 20k miles a year which doesn’t help.

So I’m curious, how long had you been driving when your premium started reducing? I think 7 years is quite a long time, and I know a few people my age who are paying £2-300. Am I doing something wrong or is it normal to pay so much for so long?

Being over 25 now has probably had an impact on the premium.

That was certainly my guess. A nice surprise this morning, I mean it’s still bloody expensive but a step in the right direction.

That’s long been said, but a few years ago, but both my ‘kids’ were insured with Admiral from 21 to 25 got steadily cheaper and then, two years apart as they hit 25, both premiums leapt up at the renewal after their 25th birthday. Admiral wouldn’t budge and both got insurance much cheaper elsewhere.

Oddly enough I saw exactly the same a few days ago on another forum.

Hitting fifty was a milestone for me in car insurance - premiums halved on the daily drivers

I gather that the sweet spot lasts until sixty then it starts going up again

21, in 2008. I insured an E39 528i for 12k a year for £700. Now it would be more like £200 at 34.

Do they live near you?

I’ve paid £250 for my Merc for years and someone on a Merc forum was moaning about his premium - I did a quote with all my details but using his Leeds LS1 postcode and it was £800, and the lowest few premiums were all companies I’d never heard of.

I’m dubious of your friends premiums unless they’re got massive excesses. Even then it shouldn’t make such a difference.

I noticed it most after a few years no claims and then being 21. Back in the late 90's after I passed my first own insurance was on an escort 1.6 si, I was 18 and with no no claims it was £1100 since then (now 41) I've never paid more than £400 ish, always had a run around or wife's car as had a company car since 2003.

I've just paid £230 to insure a R53 mini for 3k miles a year and it's kept in a garage.

I was looking at opting out the car scheme at work and with full no claims and doing 20k miles a year on a 520d it was circa £800. I think miles is what makes a big difference too.

I'm still waiting. 25 made no difference, nor did 30, so maybe by 40 I'll get these magic £200-£300 premiums everyone else always seems to get quoted?

This renewal when I changed my mileage from 15,000 to 2,000 due to Covid and not driving to work anymore went from the £600 that had not changed for the last 3 years to about £300.

When I retired and removed 5000 miles and commuting, the MX5 went down from £280 to £156.

Interesting about mileage.

Mileage on mine didn’t make any difference.

Few years ago went from 10k a year to 30k a year and price was about £20 more to add it on.

Went the other way last year from 25k a year to 8k and they said it wouldn’t make a difference. Shopped around and it was the same.

Saab v6 here pay £350 a year living zone 3 in London.

I find car makes the biggest difference. E90 M3 couldn’t get insured for under £2k with SP30 but an e39 I could get for £350 a year!!!

I think when I turned 23 my insurance dropped from about £800 to £500, paying £435 now at 25.

In the same postcode area, however it’s a surprisingly large area that covers both rough areas and some million pound houses. Although the one I’m thinking of does have a 107, which is probably a large contributing factor.

25 for me as well, price went from over £900 to less than £600 so a third off.
Think it might depend on th car insurance group as well, mine at that time was in group 19/20.

Last year's renewal is the first year mine went up, since passing my test it's came down every year.

Granted some renewals have been more but after a short time searching around have always managed to bring it down.

Went from £185 to £189 and no amount of searching could get it any cheaper.
