On a recent journey up to Cadwell park (from Surrey) I managed to trip a speed camera on Barrier Bank in Cowbit (Lincs). I've now received the advice, and unfortunately the over speed makes it a Court hearing.

First off, of course it's my fault, and I don't want to get in to a debate about the speed etc, my view is simply error on my part, I should have seen it. I have only had two speeding offences in 40 years of driving and I tend to drive purposefully.

Anyway, my problem is, I can't find out exactly where the speed camera is located as I'd be interested in figuring out how I missed it, and I also have to submit an explanation to the Court. With this in mind, it would be very useful if someone local could tell me exactly where it's located as I'm 180 miles south. A picture or a mark on google maps would be very useful in helping me write a reasonable and articulate account for the Court and might throw some light on the matter for me. I recall over taking a very slow moving vehicle around there, and consequently might have missed the camera.

Your NIP will give the camera location.

If you were stopped and cautioned at the roadside, then it won't have been a fixed camera.

I would imagine that a statement in court along the lines of "I missed the camera and that's why I got caught" wouldn't go down too well?

Which really makes the location of the camera irrelevant?

Quoted for context.

That's so funny. “These cameras are not put in places to stop accidents,” said Pete. “They are put in places to take money.”

That's a well-out-of-date image on Maps.

The old camera was replaced a couple of years ago with the newer ones shown in the link posted above - https://www.spaldingtoday.co.uk/news/cowbit-camera...

Admittedly, the new cameras are very high and don't look like the sort you're normally looking out for, so I suppose I can understand why you might not spot them if pressing on. However before you reach the camera from that direction you've passed the village entry sign, covered about a mile in a 40 limit (with repeaters and camera signs), passed the clear signange where it drops to 30, and covered a further half mile after the limit drops to 30 (past houses, a school, and a shop/garage). Not sure there's anything of help in a court situation!

From the same report "The camera is in a 30mph limit on Barrier Bank and the driver says he was caught while accelerating to leave the restriction."

Could always tell the court that he was afraid that if he failed to achieve escape velocity he would be trapped in the village forever.

Curious as to why you need to submit an explanation. Can you not plead guilty and not attend? Or are you in ban territory?

Many thanks Darkside, and yes I'm pretty sure I know where it was on the trip, and what I'd done immediately prior. I over took a slow moving tractor around there and probably sped up to over 40mph and just didn't see the camera.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'says it all really', Sebring. But yes, now I've got the info I required we can let the thread descend in to some righteous indignation and holier than thou rubbish. I'm not bleating about the cameras, it's my error. Am I sorry about the speed, no, am I annoyed at myself for not spotting a bright yellow camera, yes. Do I care what you think -no:-)

Travelling at over 50 in a 30 is probably most likely reason.

First off, I was curious to find out where it was, for my own understanding, and secondly for the sake of completeness I'd prefer to furnish the court with a statement explaining the situation and offering any mitigating information. I have a clean license, last speeding offence (88mph) was on the M4 at around 11pm in 1996. 3 points.

Five times in 26 days? Were the first few letters delivered late or did he not bother opening them? The article is dated 10th June and states he got the first letter a week ago, which would put most if not all of them outside the 14 day rule.

LOL. Do remember to switch it off when you are before the Magistrates . They take a dim view of that sort of thing. laugh

And for as long as people speed (continue to pay them money) the cameras will stay.

Still confused as to why you are in court - but then I may have missed the vital info! And no I'm not trying to lecture on speeding as I am certainly not in a position to cast the first stone!

You can offer a letter of mitigation by post, pointless to waste money attending unless it has been requested
