quite simple - does the exhaust set off the other car alarms? No? It's not too loud then hehe

I do understand, however, there's not a great deal you can do.

A regular overnight visitor to my neighbours used to have an M140i, they run a bit loud on startup, and our properties have single glazing, so it tended to wake me up. I'm an early riser so it didn't really bother me.

As it turns out, he changed cars quite regular so it didn't last long.

Why do so many threads on PH find ways to blame the OP for valid complaints?
I'm struggling to see the comments on this thread where the OP is being blamed.

As usual a lot of posters missing the point.

I do not have an issue with a noisy car, I am here, I like cars, I have done for years.

But it is the unsocial hours it happens I am struggling with. Imagine knowing that every weekday you will be woken up by a car for the next 6 months. Would you be happy?

What can I do, I can't ask him to do anything to quieten it down, that's not fair it is not VERY loud, I can't ask him to bloody change jobs so I am stuck with it, but again, imagine KNOWING this is going to happen every sodding work day for the next 6 months and imagine how you would feel.

It is just a bit depressing.
I feel your pain, that would be getting me down as well knowing it was a guarantee it would happen every day. But I think you really are stuck aren't you, I don't imagine he'll be changing his working patterns or his exhaust, even if he's a really nice guy. Are you any good at falling asleep once he's gone? Hopefully it's only a minute or two until he drives off?

I crawl the TVR out the close when I take it to work. During lockdown my new neighbour did say he'd hear me leave, but it was just before he got up anyway, and mines got a quiet exhaust system

I used to have a clio 172 with a Yozzasport single box exhaust on. It was very, very loud. My next door neighbour works 4 on, 4 off nights at the local AA call centre so sleeps in the day.

I was aware of how noisy the car was so the moment I was on the drive it was switched off to minimise the noise. Wasn't as easy in the winter sometimes when de-frosting.

They never said anything, but after I'd sold it they did comment over a beer 'over the fence' one evening "thank god you've sold that".

That makes me think now what I'd have done if they had said anything, we get on well so looking back I wouldn't have wanted to upset that. I'd have probably fitted an extra intermediate silencer.

So having been the cause of noise, i'd say approach the guy and just mention that it's a bit loud, fancy swapping parking spots?

Gotta love this place. See how much stick I received on my post about the neighbours complaining, around 75% backed up the neighbour even though the police advised we were doing nothing wrong - go figure.

Now everyone is backing up the guy with the loud exhaust and not the OP. I suspect a lot quite enjoy antagonising on here for some perculiar reason.

My advice personally though would be to have a bit of a chat with the guy, talk to him about his car and drop in a bit of banter about his exhaust. A reasonable person will read between the lines and realise it's getting on your nerves a bit. It may be that there's nothing he can do about it, however if nothing else he will be mindful of you. Because you've come across as a 'decent bloke' he will be more inclined to try and be nice as opposed to going in all guns blazing and antagonising him. Or calling the police rolleyes

That's been suggested by several people, several times.

think from a wheeler dealer episode - the cobra one - the exhaust has to be under 100db to pass a vic test -so assume that wld be the 'legal'noise

ur iPhone sold have an app to measure it.

my R32 is loud-is on start up then quiets down after 10-20 secs. I don't hang about tho and straight out the garage and away.

is it a de-cat? aren't these illegal the road?

like others have said - just ask him if he can see any way to keep it down?has anyone else in the flats said anything?

at least ur only renting and havnt bought it!

Years ago I had an ST 205 GT4, it had an exhaust that was very loud. Fortunately it came with a bung that fitted in the end of the exhaust that quietened it down.
Without the bung it would set off car alarms as you drove past, with the bung it wouldn't.

See if you can find one that will fit his exhaust, have a chat and ask if he'd consider using one. It didn't look too much different when it was fitted.

It's going to require talking to him but see if he's willing to make/fit something like this:

Buy a bag of potatoes and there’ll be one in there that fits snugly in the end of the exhaust…

I work nights at awful times, sometimes I'm not leaving my home till 00:30. In the summer months, I like to use my other car, ex track car from japan its hardly the quietest and due to big injectors and little engine. It gets all fussy if trying to move it cold. Tbh when I first started to drive it at those hours I felt really bad, could feel the curtains twitching and the windows slamming shut. Had a good chat with next door, really apologetic and he was actually a sound guy about it. Said boys will always have toys and he understands not wanting to drive it stone cold. Have a chat with him, and just see what he says. Don't go all guns blazing as remember he could be 10x worse if he wanted. 1 of my neighbours moaned about having 2 cars as you cant drive them both at the same time was her exact words. Currently there's 7 outside just because I like being an arse now to her as she went in all guns blazing

Anyone driving a vehicle with an exhaust that is louder than standard would normally be guilty of an offense, but you'd be hard pushed to get an officer to enforce it and they'd need to see your neighbour on the road with it.

Just be thankful he doesn't have a Fiat 500 Abarth. A lot of them left the factory with no resonators or silencers inside the exhaust and they make a lot of aftermarket exhausts for regular cars seem quiet.

Can't you just turn over and go back to sleep?

If he's not sitting revving it like a bd he won't be there so long it fully wakes you up.

He has to go to work, so you're stuck unless you offer him your car to use.

And in traditional PH way - you live in a flat with a car park underneath? Where do you keep your McLaren?

Does seem a bit strange to complain on a car forum about a neighbour driving a car which is not particularly loud and not revved at times he needs to drive because of his shift patterns. But I do understand how annoying noise can be as I had a problem with a neighbour's dog barking at all hours. I did have a word and the excessive noise went away. Now on the odd occasion when I hear the dog barking, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

If it were me I'd have a word with the neighbour and explain that while you realise that he isn't deliberately being anti-social, the noise from his car is waking you up. You never know, his car might have an exhaust valve switch that he keeps open because he likes the rumble, but once he knows he's disturbing you, he could keep the exhaust valves closed to quieten his car when making an early start or a late finish. You won't know unless you try.

Friend of mine has a Harley Fat Boy.

He wheels it off the drive and down the road when going out, switches off and coasts the last 100m or so when coming back.

It really is stupidly loud.

I haven't read all the thread but how about buying some noise cancelling headbands or ear muffs .
It maybe won't cancel all the noise but should dampen it to allow you to sleep .

Great news

He has left the building!!

I was using ear plugs etc, all the usual stuff, the issue was not really the noise, although that was rather loud, it was that the car port was under the flat, hence it reverberated round it, and he worked shifts

Absolutely nothing I could do, he could not swap parking spaces as they were all full, I doubt he would have agreed to park elsewhere, he can't change jobs and I very much doubt he would have done much to shut the car up.

Just goes to show that when this happens, there is very little one can do other than move or hope they move.

Bit of a shame really but I do still feel a person working shifts and driving a car that makes more noise than standard that parks underneath accommodation that is a little bit selfish.

Glad it was sorted without effort thumbup

On that final point though, where do you draw the line? One person's "normal hours" is another person's "doesn't he realise it's 8am on Saturday morning and people are sleeping?!"

There's a difference between someone marching around the flat at 4am with a bass drum and cymbals, and "normal" life noises so for your own sanity it's best to be able to live with it.

I say this as someone who's neighbours decided to put their nursery the other side of my bedroom wall and then practiced that "controlled death-screaming" approach where you let your child scream all night, so I have some sympathy.
