Recently purchased a 991.2 Carrera 4 GTS, my first Porsche, I would like to get a bit more noise from the exhaust.

I have seen the Videos of some exhausts and the noise on youtube, but this does not sound too different from the original sports exhaust on the car.

Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated.

Congrats on the new car!

As a 991.2 GTS owner, I’ve looked down the route of exhausts, although I have not committed to a new one yet.

It ultimately depends on what you want to get out of the car. The 991.2 exhaust comprises of three main components - the manifolds, the cats and the rear silencer section. Note that there may be a GPF too depending on the model year.

In its current form, the manifolds are relatively restrictive, so upgrading them to a tubular design would in theory give you some additional performance. They are also said to provide slightly more volume and an increased flat 6 howl. Litchfield provides an upgrade which can be viewed on their website. Soul Performance based in America also provide an option that is popular in the US.

Changing the cats introduces more turbo noise as they sit after the turbos. There’s some flexibility here as some people run cat-less systems and others upgrade to 200 Cell cats. It’s worth noting that the GTS already has less restrictive cats compared to the other Carrera models. I’m under the impression that it’s fitted with 400 Cell cats as opposed to 600 Cell cats. So one can argue that the cats are already upgraded compared to other Carrera models (assuming the 400 Cell cats thing is correct of course).

From what I gather, the stock PSE rear silencer is relatively well designed as it cuts out a lot of drone when the valves are closed, yet acts as a straight-through system when they are open. There’s a good video on YouTube by Fabspeed that explains this by literally cutting into an exhaust. Therefore, changing this may have little impact on the sound unless using a titanium system that resonates at a different frequency to steel.

In other words, changing the exhaust will alter the sound but these are often incremental improvements. Hence why the videos on YouTube often sound very similar to what you already have. There are systems out there that drastically change the sound (the titanium JCR silencer replacement springs to mind here) so there are options to make radical changes too.

First thing is to work out if it has a GPF as mentioned above…being a 4 GTS it could well be because after the GPF was introduced I think Porsche GB only supplied 4 GTS’s. I think it is cars supplied after the summer of 2018 that are GPF cars.

Assume you know about mods and what that means in terms of extending the warranty ? Worth asking your OPC as some have a more lenient attitude than others on warranty claims.

I’ve had 991.1 and 991.2 (pre-particulate filter) both with PSE, and I thought the .2 sounded pretty good.
Obviously different to the NA due to the twin-turbo power delivery - but I grew to prefer it.

If you really feel the need to change then might be worth talking to Litchfield. If you are prepared to spend the money and risk the Warranty benefits, then Litchfield is a respected name and can offer a menu of other upgrades and their own Warranty.

What constitutes a nice exhaust sound is subjective, but you’ve had some useful replies above.

The 991.2 with PSE essentially has 3 modes: off, sports exhaust selected, and sports mode selected, which activates the sports exhaust and the stiffer damper setting.

Personally, I don’t like the farts and bangs, so I opt for the middle setting and activate the dampers separately. This way you get the volume and interest to the ear through, but without all the engineered pops and bangs.

I’ve fitted the Akrapovic slip on silencer. It’s a fraction louder, but significantly more cultured in its tone, with no additional drone.

The weak point in the set up seems to be the turbos and their dodgy oil feed. Mines been fine so far, but hasn’t been battered through the winter months. If it starts smoking I’ll switch to the upgraded Litchfield ones, rather than getting OEM parts. My philosophy has been to upgrade if anything is replaced and so I’m out of the warranty system.

Good luck and let us know. If you have GPFs, I’m not sure how likely you’d be to fall foul if you did away with them. It’s been done on diesels for years, but I don’t know if it’s naughty or properly sanctionable.
