Thanks all

My worry is ensuring I know where all the parts are and ensuring we get them.

And if refuses to let me take the car? Solicitor or Police? cop

As long as you agree what has been done and how much your should pay it shouldn’t come to that…but 100% expect missing parts, some of which brand new which your paid for

Thanks - I have a breakdown of the parts I have bought. I'm not sufficiently skilled to identify them - they are mainly small engine parts.

And I know I'm catastrophizing but what if he says he's spent 100 hours so far....

That’s there it will come down to any pricing he’s given you and how much is left to do.

There is no simple answer here except to sit down, and if you’re adamant on taking the car elsewhere coming to an agreement based on an estimate from somewhere else if the cost to complete

If you pay by credit card you can you enter a dispute if you feel you've been overcharged? Somebody will know about this and if it's possible.

What cost did you agree for the whole job?

Embarrassingly, I didn't.

Been there done this. After fruitless conversations via phone and text I dropped in and had a polite conversation to get into what the problem is. That was a relatively easy story in the end, the garage had lost their expert, their replacement hire hadn't been up to it and they were still struggling to recruit with no clear timeframe. With that in mind it was better for both of us for me to take the work elsewhere - clear the garage for jobs they could progress, and me getting progress on the car again. Shook hands and a day later it was on a transporter to the new garage.

Then you ask a respected marque expert for a quote to do the work he was asked to do, including # of hours. That then becomes evidence in your favour when you tell him to FRO.

I assume it’s your frog eye sprite: there are plenty of places that could do this for you, there is an excellent place in West Sussex who used to look after mine. Not sure where you are located but I agree with another reply: pay for what he has done and collect it.

As predicted, he's saying he won't give the car or the parts I have purchased back to me.

He's just sending messages about "no one tells me what to do" and "I don't give a f**k about you, I'm moving to Canada"

Where do I go from here?

Eesh that's difficult.

Sensible head would be to try really hard to reset the relationship doing your best to be the grown up, without sounding patronising. Once the car is back and you've paid you can then go to the small claims if you've paid for stuff that clearly hasn't been done or provided, or chalk it up to experience if you can stomach the loss.

I'd also be doing a full write up on various A series based groups naming and shaming, sticking to the facts of course.

Failing that how many intimidating mates have you got?

check your home insurance and speak to a solicitor.

If he's refusing to do the work, allow you to pay ofr the work done and remove the parts / vehicle then you're a bit stuff

perhaps call 101 and just report it so its on record, if he is leaving for Canada they are very picky as to who they let in!

SIX MONTHS!?

Sorry OP, this has all the hallmarks of a failing business and with his comments about moving to Canada my concern would be him completely disappearing, leaving a trail of debt in his wake and your car being unrecoverable from the locked premises of a landlord to whom he owes a load of rent and has done a runner from.

As is the case with all useless Walts like this, he's probably watched one too many YouTube videos about living in Canada, would like to do it, but has neither the means or the gumption to actually go and do that so will continue being a st mechanic ripping people off at will.

Tell him you are coming to collect the car on a specified date, you want all the parts present and a bill for work done so far.

Is he the kind of bloke to be 'physically assertive'? Do you have a load of mates you could turn up with on your recovery trip?

How aholes like this stay in business I will never know.

Yes, reported to the Police. We've also spoken to their landlord and they've given notice on the premises.

I'm assuming that the car won't be recovered at all now.

Would my insurers pay out?

Is the car in a condition where it will roll ok on the wheels?

If so then this really is one of the rare occassions where you need to turn up with your recovery truck and a couple of mates to get the car back.

I've just spoken to his landlord - he is seriously behind with his rent. The landlord has also received complaints from another owner, whose car is stuck in there.

Problem is, I'm a bit old (and so are my mates!) for a punch up.

He clearly has no intention of completing the work. I'm currently waiting for a local solicitor to call me back.

Get a recovery truck/trailer booked for tomorrow to collect it. Go there tomorrow and meet the truck, tell the garage owner you arent going anywhere without your car.

You are spot on. I need to hire some heavies though. I've spoken to a couple of bailiffs, but of course they want to follow a legal instruction.

I don't know anyone I can use for some muscle.
