Is it legal to own a Disabled firearm in the uk ?

i.e wanting it for display purposes in the home?

or are all firearms a big no-no regardless of whether they work or not ?

You can own shotguns without too much bother. My neighbour shoots rabbits from his bathroom window. He has a stamp sized garden.
Another one has a proper .22 rifle.
Don't think there is too much issue with deactivated stuff - could be wrong though.

I was up at our farm one day, and the man who rents our other house landed up in his big off road landy.. He steps out, what does he have with him? A fkin sniper rifle. It was mental, had a silencer on it and all. Some noise off of it.

But yea, you can have a fire arm you just have to apply for a licence to have one.

Not many Catholics around here would be allowed something like the one your man has, he only got it because he did a favour for someone high up.

He even has permission to make his own bullets at home.

No but it'll cost you.

Why not join a full-bore gun club and work your way up to a .50?

As long as its properly deactivated with a proof house certificate its fine.

I have a deactivated Dragunov SVD sniper rifle with a PSO1 scope that may be for sale if anyone's interested.

Loading your own ammunition isn't rare at all.

And by sniper rifle, i assume you just mean a hunting rifle with a scope on it? Most hunters use scopes and most people who shoot at night use a moderator/supressor/silencer.

Not sure what religion has to do with it...?

I'm pretty sure the only legislation regarding deactivated weapons in the UK is regarding stamping and certifcation from one of the 2 proofing houses in the UK. As long as the weapon in question has a stamp and certificate then there is no issue with ownership.

Owning guns in the UK is far too bloody difficult for me to be bothered with.

Otherwise I'd buy a Glock. I'd keep it at the range and blast the odd box of cartridges at some targets for the craic.

But that's not actually technically impossible. Just practically impossible.

No problem with deactivated weapons at all, but when buying check the proof house certificate is genuine as they are frequently forged. Ring the proof house on the cert and they will verify it before you buy.

The only thing to watch out for is if you have a collection of deacs like me including a BREN gun and the like and you then apply for a firearms licence for non-deacs when the plod visits to check things out and sees enough ordnance to start a small war he gets the wrong idea and you may have some explaining to do! biggrin

IIRC all cartridge firing pistols are banned in the UK, even the UK Olympic team can't practice here. Of course there are now more illegal handguns used in the UK than ever before, but it was an easy political "win" for the Labour Party following Dunblane. Yet more ill thought out knee jerk legislation to appease the red top reading masses.

On a slightly related note I found a spent .50 round (the projectile) when out metal detecting. Guess it was a battle of britain relic.

Pretty sure the FAC application form doesn't ask for your religious beliefs though... wink

They do check your criminal record though!

You can also buy antique firearms - these are fully-working firearms that the ammo is (supposedly) hard to get, so you don't need a licence.

I picked up a nice Smith & Wesson New Model 3 double actiom recently, which even came with 6 (not at all hard to find) rounds of .44 Russian ammo. The ammo was deactivated, of course.

'Course, it'd be totally illegal to buy some .45 blanks (no licence required), an extractor to extract the gunpowder and primers, and reactivate the .44 Russian ammo, hence giving you a fully working (now not so legal to have) firearm. So won't be doing that, but it wouldn't be hard.
