I thought I would start a thread for these wonderful hummers and all the other different models too!
I have always wanted one of these ever since I saw them for sale in a Jewellers in in the early 70's.
I couldn't afford one then and seeing them on another thread re-ignited the interest.
This one is a new acquisition for me and it is a 1963 Swiss model and probably a conversion (but the seller said it was a rare factory) because it has gold hands. I will get some of the white hands from the USA and get them changed because I find the gold hands a bit difficult to see at a glance.
The watch has been well looked after, no scratches and the glass is scratch free as well.
The old Canon Ixus has it's limitations close up!

Edited to to be more inclusive for all the Accutrons

I think Omega developed thir own movement along similar principles, like a few other companies at that time (that electricwatches website details them).

Does anyone know of a good source of batteries for these? I have one I wear as a dress watch but the battery is dead and I seem to be struggling to find a dealer who handles them...

Is it a self-doable job?

if it turns out that only a hummer specialist can do anything I believe there's a guy in the UK who's got a good reputation. I'll link if I remember it, although there're a few on here with Accutrons that may be able to help better.
There are a couple of guys that are recommended on TZ. One is Paul at Electric Watches, who is based in Brighton (used him to sort out a Seiko 5 I was having trouble with) can't remember the other one though!
That's the chap.

Paul Wirdnam at Electric Watches is your man.

214s are DIY but you'll need tools to open a 218.

I bought my battries of the internet.......

1) you can have the watch recalibrated to run on modern batteries as the old type of battery is deemed not freindly to the planet....... how ever this is a very expensive route and probably cost more then the watch.

or

2)or you can you use an Accucell 1 battery..... a modern battery witha tiny piece of wizardary to alter the volts to what is correct for running the watch.....

Mine came back from Paul looking like this after he replaced the hands and made it run properly with a newly fitted 1.55 battery and replaced a cog wheel. It now gains a bit if I wear it and loses if I don't wear it!
It is an original Swiss one and not a conversion apart from the hands which I sourced from a guy in the States who gets these made up to the original pattern.
It has an original Bulova bracelet too.

Here's mine from 1976. It's amazingly accurate for a vintage watch, lost a second over 7 days.

Old thread, but already resurrected, so worth mentioning that probably 9 out of 10 Accutrons will run on a silver oxide cell quite happily without adjustment. There's no risk to the (very simple) electronics or coils from the extra 0.2 volts - discrete components back then simply weren't as sensitive as today's ICs can be!

The few that don't (where the tuning fork vibration is too high with the extra voltage)are quick and fairly simple to adjust with the right kit, and it should normally be done anyway if you're having one serviced.

Adjustment of the indexing is all part of the service itself, so a repairer who adjusts it to run on an accucell rather than a silver oxide is simply tying you in to accucells in the future for no good reason!

Impressively orangey too - I thought the original (as opposed to the recent Precisionist re-release) was yellow fora long time as all those I saw looked like mine!

Great watch though and stonkingly accurate!
