Discussion
So after lots of advice I've decided I need a Caterham in my life, either when my GT86 sells or in the winter where I might be able to pick up a bargain. That bit I'm yet unsure.
I'm drawn to the idea of a 160, principally because of the fact I've always had Japanese cars and love the idea of a little jdm engine buzzing away, and the value.
But has anyone actually owned one? Any comparisons compared to a 1.6?

First, I have to admit to not having driven a 160, but my thoughts are:
For:
1, I like the 160 looks, it's the best looking Seven since the Lotus series 2 in my opinion.
2, From what I've read the 160 is a hoot to drive as long as you're not one of the "you can never have too much power" brigade. I presume as you've had the good taste to buy a GT86, that doesn't apply to you.
Against:
1, A couple of articles I have read talk about poorly spaced ratios in the gearbox, and a big gap somewhere but I can't remember.
2, we live in a crowded country and a lot of overtaking is required to make progress. I have as Sigma 125 and it is quick enough between 50 and 80 to get past quickly. While the 160 gets to 60 quite quickly, my Seven has 50% more power and torque do has a much better chance of overcoming the terrible aerodynamic drag of the Seven

Not sure about its looks, the thin wheels look odd to me.
As for the power, the only way will be to try it. I guess if you're not planning to track it or go long distances quickly it could be fine. Presumably good on fuel?
For me I don't find 220bhp too much, it's easily controlled, but I can well imagine less power being just as much use and fun, especially on the road, though 80bhp might be a bit low for me.
