"You will be pleased to hear your car is almost complete and is booked for IVA on 11/01/2017! Once it has passed the test we can then send off your documents to get the car registered in your name. Please be aware that the registration process can take several weeks to complete which is why we are requesting these documents now. To register the car I will need the following documents:
• A PDF copy of your insurance certificate with the full chassis number of your car, this is XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
• A copy of your driving licence.
• A copy of a utility bill with your current address on that is not older than three months."

I am a bit confused because normally a car is issued a numberplate to be able to get a V5 and car insurance, but Caterham say we need car insurance (without car registration?) to get the car registered and a V5 issued.
The Caterham recommended insurance companies are at least £250 pa more expensive than other insurance companies that will insure the car, but the cheaper insurance companies will only do so when they have the car registration.

The usual suspects for Caterham insurance: A-Plan REIS, Lloyd & Whyte, etc (see various threads here and on BlatChat for more info) should be able to help - the chassis is a unique identifier that they’ll use temporarily and the policy will be amended to the reg number once allocated by DVLA.

I had no issues insuring on chassis number when I was building my car (can’t recall who I used though!)

I actually found Lloyd and White to be cheaper than everyone last year and this year! Get a quote, you may be surprised.

Insured mine on the chassis number with Footman James. I've never had a problem using the chassis number with any insurance company.

As above Footman James have been unbeatable for me. I insured my first Caterham with them when it was new (against chassis number) and they have always offered very reasonable cover.

Ive paid about £150ish for the last couple of years with 5000 miles allowance. You can add 3 track days a year on top of that for another £100 or so.

Mine is (still) insured on the chassis number, waiting for an IVA re-test.

That's only because I wanted to be able to drive it to and from the test and to have any rectification work done.

Not sure why it would need insuring for Caterham to IVA and register it for you though? They trailer the cars to the Gillingham test centre.

If you're paying £500 for insurance you could end up paying the best part of £80-£100 for a period of insurance for an unregistered car.

Thanks for all the responses.
1. I insured with Footman James at £260. Will be less when I can get the cars back inside, as at the moment it is going to be in an open bay garage.
2. The IVA has been completed. It is insured on premises at Caterham Cars until it is road registered and taxed at which point I can drive it away.

Can't wait - Caterham 420R, 6 speed

In IVA spec, so wing mirrors to be removed, rear exhaust move back to side exhaust. Stripe to be completed.

Nice car but why the rear exhaust? My R400D passed the IVA with a side exhaust.
