Afternoon all!

I have read in many places that when self building a Caterham it makes life far easier to unpackage everything before you start and have it laid out ready.

Can anyone give a rough idea of how much space this will take up?

I’m currently going through a garage re-design (building a work bench, shelves etc) and a major consideration is how I’m going to build my Caterham (academy car).

Thanks for any help.

If you were literally going to lay everything out then you're going to need at least double the space required by the finished car plus working / walk around access. You should at the very least take an inventory at the earliest possible opportunity to identify what is missing but you and a helper could set the tub to one side while you do this and then tidy it all up again afterwards.

Remember to think about when and how you're going to insert the De Dion tube as this is when you'll need maximum width.

I built my academy car in an 8ft x 20ft garage without any problems. (Albeit it the larger items like seats and rear wings were kept elsewhere until required near the end of the build).

Go through the boxes - there is a table of the expected contents - and put it back in straight away.

I put mine bang in the middle of the garage and it went in just fine - you have to get a little creative and use space wisely - for example the rear end bits went under the rear of the car until required, some bits went in the boot, some in the car - basically put stuff in its approximate locations - and put the big bits (Wings/Cage and Seats) out of the way somewhere else as these are done close to the end of the build.

I unpacked everything and took a rough inventory check, then put it all away on shelves etc, in groups,

I didn’t have a space problem, I have a very big garage but I reckon 20’ x 8’ or so would be OK except, as said, for fitting the DD.

One thing. During the build I still found a few items missing; there was never any issue getting them from CC even 2 or 3 months after delivery.

Thanks. I have a double garage (a bit more than 20’ x 20’) but there is another car parked on one side. I’ll be able to move it out the way for the odd time when I need a bit more space, but I can’t afford to surrender the whole garage to the Caterham for the duration of the build.

I’ll definitly unpack and take an inventory of everything when it first arrives. I was hoping that I could leave it unpacked, but from what you have said that might be a bit of a squeeze.

It'd be easy to scratch the gelcoat / paint on the wings, nose, bonnet, seats etc if you're tripping over them in the garage
