I am looking for a Caterham Superlight model - open minded as to K series or Duratec engined but want something in good shape. I look on PHs regularly but there seems to be very little choice. Went to one of the dealers who advertise on PHs today and quite frankly, they were not very helpful at all and it was a wasted trip.

Where else should I be looking? Any suggestions as to good dealers or websites to keep an eye on? My ideal car would be a R400 (K or D) or 420R with narrow chassis. Will be used mainly for road trips, weekend blasts and a few trackdays per year.

Any suggestions as to where to look would be appreciated
Thanks

Thanks. I do keep an eye on PHs, less so on Facebook. A few people have recommended Millwood which is encouraging but they don’t carry much stock. They have a nice blue R300 in, might go and have a look at that next week if I can.

Qulaity not quantity..I bought my 150SV from John, and it was the nicest and easiest car purchase Ive ever had. They have a very very strong rep in Caterham circles.

Hello Mate,

I bought my Caterham from Caterham midlands many many years ago, it was a good experience.

Your location says London so I would suggest sevens and classics near Brands Hatch and perhaps a visit to Caterham at Gatwick.

You could also check out the lotus7.club forums.

Happy hunting.

I’ve just looked for Caterham Midlands and they don’t seem to be there anymore! I did have a look at the main dealers and their stock is generally newer / top end of the market.

Seven & Classics have an R500 but I think that might be more than I need for mainly road use.

Thanks for the suggestions, very helpful.

I'd also suggest G P SEVENS near Sevenoaks.

Seconded for GP Sevens. Antony and Damian both really good guys.

I did see that Superlight R, looks like great fun but perhaps too track orientated for me. I want a manual gearbox and something mainly for road use.

I did go to GP Sevens. I liked a car there but they said they would only take it out if I was sure I was going to buy it as it had just been cleaned. Don’t think I have ever bought a used car without trying it so I left. Strange way to do business.

Have you tried a sequential box car? In my opinion they are better to use not just on the track but also on the road. Very easy to use and great fun. I would reccomend giving one a try if you haven't already

It takes a long time to clean a 7 properly, it's no just a wash, that said I understand you need to drive a car.

GP have a lovely R400d. Millwood did have 2 420R's within the last few months.

Williams have a nice yellow R400d but I wouldn't buy a washer off them due to horrible experience with a car from them.

That’s very interesting re the sequential box. I’ve never tried one but figured it was mainly for track work. You are right, I shouldn’t discount anything before trying it.

I’ve never cleaned a 7 but was hoping as it’s small, it would be relatively easy. I can understand them not wanting to get a car dirty but I can’t buy a car without trying it. Will check out a few of the others mentioned. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Milwood so I’ll Get myself down there. They have an R300 and R500 at the moment so perhaps one will fit the bill.

Thanks again for the feedback, much appreciated.

Caterham Midlands was near Hinckley and owned by CC. It closed in 2015 when Bookatrack took on the mantle in the midlands until being bought by Ginetta last year when they dropped the brand.

I was told by someone who should know that it was CC that dropped BookaTrack/ Ginetta, not the other way round. BookaTrack/ Ginetta were very happy to continue with the Caterham dealership alongside.

That said, Caterham did say that they were looking for another Midlands area dealer I think.

It isn't very likely that you'd want a competitor (of some shape) to own your dealership I reckon!

Hi Blackmamba,
Dropped you a DM (on the off chance the car you looked at may have been the blue 420R) as that's mine. Many cars with all Caterham dealers are on Sale or Return, including mine. In my case I've asked for the car not to be driven in poor conditions as its spotless (unless they are super confident a deal would result), other owners selling cars on a SOR basis may ask the same.
Cheers
Pete

gp sevens are very good. most of their cars are sor so they do "qualify" customers carefully. at this time of year its easy for a car to get so dirty it can take several hours to clean it for sale (Especially on the roads around them).
antony and damian are very good so dont give up on them. its quite possible the cars owner has given them very explicit instructions on test drives.
