I have tried several ear mufs, ear plug, sound cancelling headphones over the years, so many i lost track of them. I got a set of Flare isolate and these are at another level. absolutely brilliant, there is nothing i have tried so far that comes close. Highly recommended.

Would they work under a helmet, or do they stick out too much?

I have some custom silicone earplugs by ACS https://www.acscustom.com/uk/ which were purchased through a L7C purchase (around 9 years ago IIRC). They filter out the damaging noise range, rather than blocking everything out. Expensive, and you have to have moulds taken of your ear canals, but highly recommended.

I've always used the Etymotic plugs, having been given a pair when I was working at the students union and a sound and lighting tech.

Work really well in the car for me, with or without a helmet. Got a pair for me, the ms, and a spare pair and or disposable foam for occasional passengers.
