So I’ve placed a deposit for the new 170S. Waiting time circa 8 months and I’ll be building from a kit. Excited to finalise the options then it’ll be a case of reading as much as I can before it comes and clearing out a good space in our garage. Can’t wait!

Congratulations on the order!

I’ve done similarly - order placed for 170R kit, delivery around Feb ‘23. Much deliberation underway on options too - spec cutoff point in Sept. Very much looking forward to the build!

Did you test drive the 170 before placing the order? I was remarkably impressed (hence the order) - and that follows ten years of Crossflow ownership. I do find myself wondering whether to move to a 360, but I think that a 170 will do very nicely for road use.

No, I’ve not test driven a 170, nor any Caterham for that matter. But it’s a car I’ve wanted since I was a kid and this is an itch I need to scratch. I hope I won’t be disappointed!

I’m similarly going round in circles with the options. I think I’ve decided on everything except the colour and seat choice.

Seat choice - you really need to sit in the different types to find what is comfortable. Personally I find the grp bucket seats uncomfortable after 20 minutes of driving as opposed to the carbon/kevlar ones for some reason.
Not driven a Caterham?!! - I strongly suggest trying before buying, they can be marmite cars!

Had a trip to Oakmere Caterham. They had a lovely volcano red 170S. They really are tiny, but it was good to sit in the various seats. I’m going for standard rather than buckets - much better padding and more suited to road use IMO.

Can you still get the steel wheels from the Sprints? The worst thing about the 170 are those alloys that look like they come off a caravan-not sure if the PCD or offsets are the same though.

I thought they were meant to invoke bugatti type 35?

My first thought when I looked at the above picture was they look like something from Halfords. What were they thinking!
I like the 170 with the steel wheels and a nice 60's colour scheme smile

Thread bump.

Has anybody taken delivery of their 170 kit yet? I’m seriously considering placing an order and wanted to get owners feedback.

My last caterham was a 1.4K roadsport which I absolutely loved. The 170 seems to be pulling at my heart strings way more than a 420r (second choice).

The Suzuki powered 7 looks an interesting choice. Good job its become available again after the sad demise of the Sigma engine.
I built my Sigma powered 7 in 2007, so fairly early on in production. K series cars were also still available in small numbers at the time.
15 years on I still love it.

Enjoy the build & driving a 7 for the first time.

When you say tiny, are they not the same size as any other Caterham? Or is it narrow rear wings that does it?

I have got that right that they have narrow rear wings? I wonder if those would work on my 1995 LA Caterham?

Yes, the 170 is exactly the same size as any other S3 car (not an SV obviously).

However they are narrow track with skinny rear wings and less rubber so they really do look even smaller than a standard S3 car.

Thanks, if the rear track is narrow, probably wouldn't work on a LA caterham. What axle is it?

Anyone got one and can measure how far the rear wings stick out from the body please?

It’s the standard S3 body with the 660 engine, that’s the combo that qualifies favourably in Japan for tax.

They come with the Z axle at the rear.

Mine’s tucked up in the trailer in the garage, I’ll see if I can find the details in the handbook for you.

It is narrower than standard, must be in the wings as the body is the same.
