blasphemous stereo

Had my 1.8 VVC for about a month now, and i reckon its the best decision i ever made!! Now don't get me wrong, i love the engine noise, but was thinking about getting a stereo fitted, so that the traffic jam moments are not quite so tedious. Was just wondering if anyone knew where i could get a head unit and speakers fitted by someone decent??! the people in normal car audio shops seem to just give me blank looks and shrug their shoulders, thus not instilling much confidence...

Or just wear a personal stereo, which I know is dangerous before everyone tells me.

Can’t see why not, if you want one, it’s your car, get one.

You can get a black plastic holder for the head unit that can be bought from halfords for about £10, they are the same type used on minis where the stereo hangs off the bottom dash rail. Depending on quality of speakers you want the ones than come in their own case would be easiest to fit, you should be able to get some compact lightweight ones that could be mounted somewhere.

In fact it was a mono - one speeker between the seats.

got a end of range cheap sterio with a wire remote!
I put mine in the left side of the tunnel in a plastic carriage/box from halfords for holding sterios.

I had a constant live from one of the wire under the dash, lights I think. Make sure your speaker is good and loud. Much above 50mph it was hard to hear even on max vol, but under 50 and for long journeys it was ok .

The radio reception wasnt good as all being ali but wind the aerial around the seat runner frame and it is ok on the stronger signals.

I mainly used the cassete player, so moving on with time go for one with a CD player, anit vibrations and works at a 90 degree angle ! and a face off security.

At track days is was so much fun sitting in the paddock waiting to go with something energising blasting out from my mono, puts a smile on faces and it did not slow me down.

hehe those were the days! When I did my epic trip up north in the snow I really neaded a bit of company and the cosest I got was my tape and radio.

Caterham have fitted stereos to cars in the past. They had one with a box under the dash in front of the gearlever to fit the stereo. The speakers were through the bulkhead behind the seats. Apparently audible 80mph with the roof down (though possibly not on throttle body cars).

Worst case use a personal stereo!

iv been thinking about this for when i get my catheram best solution i came up with was a jack socket in the dash linked into an amp in the boot wich powers 2 speakers between the seats

nice one doug, and very nice car too. I also have a 1.8 VVC, and a carbon dash, but the switches are all on one level, making it difficult to squeeze the head unit in. Cheers though, nice to see I'm not the only one!! where have you squeezed in the speakers?? between the seats and on the tunnel? cheers!!

I know someone who fitted a kenwood mask system to his SL, built a sud cabinet in the boot and stuck the biggest pair of speakers you could buy in the bulkhead behind the seats - stereo separation was non-exisitent but you could hear it above 100 mph

buy yourself a Peltor intercom system with the music interface on it. then you can do as we do and hook up a MD player or MP-3 player, and have the added benefit of noise reduction headphones.

works a treat in our SV....

i was at caterham south last year and mr nearn's new SV had a stereo tucked in to it.

The SV I sat in at the MG factory a couple of years ago had a CD player fitted above the passenger footwell with speakers behind the seats.
Looked a nicely finished job to be honest, but not sure how it would sound while at full chat though? Depends on how powerful I guess?

ok vladd, funny you should mention it, but thats what I am going for.... now, having driven with headphones before in the cat, theres too much noise above about 30 mph, so any suggestions for headphones anyone??! Preferably short of buying all that intercom stuff....

Sony do some in-ear buds that act as earplugs as well. I've used them on planes and skiing and although they take some getting used to, particularly working out the best way to fit them, they are amazingly good. Combine it with an iPod and you're away.
