Hello Guy

Trust you are well and hear that you have Miles's car for sale. And now an S4 joining your collection. It looks well looked after.

I sold my old 1985 Super Sprint (C225RPM) to a guy in Belgium in 2010 at too low a price and did not do my homework on its value. It only had 20,000 miles on the clock from new and was in very good condition. Now have a R300, which is great fun. So 27 years of Caterham ownership and it still gives grin factor 10

Hi Piers.!

Great to find you on here! 25 years ownership for me, so a mere beginner!

Yes, the S4 is great. I've finally completed all of the mechanical work (nothing major, just glitches) and I'm going to MOT it next week. I still don't know what to do with it though, in terms of keeping it or letting it go to a good home. I've got other Lotus 7 projects on the go at present which need more time than I have available.!

I know you had talked about selling your Seven, but I thought that would be a "keeper". R300 is great fun though.!

Hope all is well with you and yours,

Guy

Evening all. Not sure how this happened. Went onto "How Many Left.com" and found this site, expecting Porsches not 7 s4's. What a nice surprise.

I think I own the yellow S 4 that Dieter7S4 refers to,when he says that he saw a yellow S4 in Bournmouth years ago. It's a 1972 yellow S4 twin cam big valve that I bought in 1982 from the Nairne(?spelling!)himself. It "for my son!"who was 2. He does get to drive it sometimes!

I love the site. Thank you all for the tip re the postage tube thingy! I've spent 30 years trying to stop pouring petrol onto the road. When it was cheap I could live with the fire hazard but now....! Anyhow,it seems to work. Took 24 hours to swell to fit. However,I do keep an electricians screwdriver in the car to get it out!

The car has been pretty much rebuilt mechanically from the ground up. A couple of slight modifications. I fitted an electric fuel pump in parallel to prime the system if it hadn't been used for a while. Last year the gear knob broke off in my hand when I was driving. Tricky to change gear with 11/2 in of gearstick! Anyhow,I made a new top half from the ball part of a total hip replacement that I took out of a patient in 1970. I knew it would come in useful one day.

Finally,it's great to have found you all.

More on the S4 resto

Got the brake callipers finished - coating looks really good. I have used it before and it makes cleaning brake dust really easy.

http://cnx.org/content/m43453/latest/

Hope to start putting bits back on chassis this weekend

Try going to "www.cnx.org"

Then type in "Lotus S4 Barron" in search window.

That should get you in.

I think the site works for all browsers. If not let me have your e-mail address and I will send you a "pdf" file

Back to the plastic end of cardboard postage thingy to stop fuel leaking from the filler cap. Many years ago I fitted a stainless steel pan scourer into the neck of the filler in a bid to stop fuel surge and maybe reduce the leak.
It failed but I left it in place anyway. It does pretty much fill the neck, and with this in place it has kept the plastic flap right at the top of the filler and thus allows the flap to be removed with relative ease.
Oh,and it stops the leak!

Got the fuel tank in http://cnx.org/content/m43495/latest/

Found the frame number - GE 031 - anyone have an idea how to find the vin/chassis number from that.

Why not ask John Watson L7 club historian, his email address is on L7 club site.
Hope this helps

Hajo, if you are going to the Classic Le Mans, lets met up. We are staying at Le Bounty, which is around 4 Km south of Mulsanne village on the D338. PH are holding a meet there on the Friday afternoon.

Be really good to meet you as if I recall correctly we started internet comms in 1996, when I first got the S4, via the seven mailing list.

Cheers

Mike

Even fitted the main body tub for a test - seems like it needs a lot of work to get it to fit right?

Any advice?

The body tub is easier to fit if it's warm. [heat makes it more flexible]
I managed to fit mine working alone, though many hands may make this job easier.
Hope this helps

Here's another 7S4-elise combo, this photo is taken at a service station on our way back from a road trip to France, which unfortunately didn't happen. It ended in Luxembourg, due to mechanical issues we had to abort, luckily we were able to drive back safely.

Nice car, and with a hard top!

I have a question: I am fitting a Momo steering wheel, but can't find the right boss for it. Could someone please tell me which one is the correct to use? What did the steering column come out of?

Steering wheel boss is Triumph Spitfire, as are the column indicator & light stalks.
Easy to find a spitfire boss at any UK autojumble.
Good luck
