If it helps matters our second car is a Clio 172 which I get great pleasure driving. The main car is my daily, hence wanting something a bit 'pepped up' whilst still retaining the family needs.

Now that I've justified myself, let's have your suggestions.

Would this suit?

Not that it really matters what other people think, but whenever I see a 'sporty' people carrier, e.g Zafira GSI, or the Ford one with the 2.5 engine (S-Max, G-Max?) I genuinely feel pity for the driver, as if he is a bit of a petrol head, but life + family got in the way of his dreams and he's had to compromise.
What a strange comment. How do you know that the MPV driver doesn't have something else tucked in the garage for the weekend? Would you feel less pity for the driver if the MPV was a low powered diesel model instead?
Probably, yes. Low powered diesel motor probably more suited to the task of moving people, in the same way a V12 is more suited to the task of propelling supercar than an inline 4.

Anyway, it's just my natural instinct on how I feel when I see one - can't explain it any further (might have emanated from the 'daddy cool' advert).
Didn't mean to offend anyone.

One child, one Labrador and a cocker spaniel on the way. Main commute is only 14 miles a day with regular trips from hull to Huddersfield thrown in.

For when you absolutely have to smash your dog into the back window, on a budget, you'd struggle to do better.

The Mitsubishi Legnum does the same, but they're starting to get a bit long in the tooth now...

OK, so you're looking at BIG estate or mini-MPV.

From ABBAland there's the Volvo V70, and the Saab 95.

From the Fatherland there's the A6, E Class, 5 Series, and arguably the Skoda Superb and VW Passat.

From the land of Cheese and Wine there's the Citreon C5 and the Peugeot 407, and we have the Vauxhall Vectra and the Ford Mondeo from back there.

There are a few oddities from Japan, such as the Mitsubishi Legnum, the Subaru Legacy, and the Nissan Stagea. They're all quit specialist at the top end of them, the Legacy is available in "normal" specs of engine too.

And from the States, there's the Crysler 300c, but the boot isn't really huge.

What takes your fancy?

I need pictures, all from that list aren't lighting any fires, the v70r is probably the pick of the bunch.

Judging by your response to the Subaru, maybe the Legnum:

or Stagea:

are your thing.

Allow me to redress the balance, as I have just bought a Zaffy GSI...

I wanted a cheap but fun MPV, had to have 7 seats, and a decent amount of poke, and be straightforward to service myself.

The GSI model is based on the earlier Zafira 'A' and is certainly beginning to look its age inside. I have the full leather recaro seats, which look a bit more plush than the half-leather/cloth standard trim. The interior plastics are a little cheap, and you don't get many goodies.

It's also pretty thirsty, but you might have guessed that from the spec - near enough 200bhp with a turbo to give it some punch - so expect low to mid 20s mpg if you enjoy yourself.

The original 'Daddy Cool' Arden Blue exterior colour is lovely and striking when kept in good nick, but there are plenty of black and silver versions out now.

The ride is firm, and you are seated quite high, so it does tend to totter around corners. The steering wheel is rather bus-like. Even a low mileage example will be getting on now, and it will rattle and creak over British roads.

However, despite these negatives, it is great fun, and you don't have to drive it like a loon all the time! The Flex 7 seat arrangements are a work of genius, and very easy to configure how you like. The later Zafira 'B' models were a worthwhile improvement on the original model, but these are much more money and the VXR equivalent model suffered from torque-steer and a lairier styling.

It has to be said that Vauxhalls, and especially sporty Vauxhall MPVs don't have the greatest image around, and prices of tattier example reflect their descent into chav transport.

I thought about getting the sporty S-Max, but it was a lot more money. It is a far better car to drive, with a more inviting interior - a more modern design all around.

I would echo the sentiments that say if you can get by with a sporty estate instead that would be my choice if I didn't need the extra seats.

The standard Galaxy and S-Max will outhandle a Zafira GSI, not the old model Galaxy which was not great but the new one, it handles beter than it has any right to, it is a large car platform with a large car on it rather than a small car platform stretched.

Maybe this will help put you off,

Surprised at how well these hold their value. £4-5k for 2003 or 2004 cars in the PH classifieds. The cost when new was about £20k so that's 25% value retention after 8 years. Not bad for a car with a powerful petrol engine and a supposedly naff image.

Minor cult following?

I should add that my Zafira GSI cost £2500 - try getting even a non-sporty S-Max or new-shape Galaxy for a third of that...

The stages is one ugly duckling isn't it!

Do you have any decent interior shots of your zafira ? I was looking at the black ones, I do love a clean black car.

This forum has such a passionate hatred for all things Vauxhall, and I don't quite understand why. I bet that 99% of the posters have never owned one.

Personally, I've only had good experience with them, and until I can afford a Jaguar I'll probably keep buying them.
