Can someone help me with specs of these. Specifically GLS variants. I know the GLS was a coupe but when did the 4dr versions have a GLS variant appear? Thanks

According to Vauxpedia, the GLS saloon was introduced in late 1979 for the 1980 model year.

I think 79, was a high spec model based on the ascona SR maybe even the Berlina version of the Ascona which was like a Cortina Ghia rival but felt a million times more sporty.

I'd agree Cavaliers of that generation were much better to drive than equivalent Ford Cortinas/Capris.

I had a 1980 Cavalier 2000GLS Sportshatch in 1985 and it drove so much better than any 2 litre Capri! Even if the auto-choke was hateful and the after-market glass sunroof leaked.
