Maybe it's time to use a better piece of software for the forum?

Thorney - this is caused by the file representing the MySQL table being corrupt.
Try repair table <tablename>; from the MySQL command line. Might need to stop and start the MySQL admin server after that.

Guys, I don't think any of the problems over the last few weeks have been down to the PhpBB software - always seems to be database issues, and these mostly seem to be problems with the database server.

It is the db server, casued by some kind of badwidth error to the other server. I dont have access to it and web blokey is no-where to be found.

I have to say I'm getting a bit tired of this.

Umm...yeah...I was going to say that. Thorney have you tried turning your computer off then turning it back on again, that nearly always works for me!

Apart from that thing Jim said and turning it off/on thats all the help I think I can offer!!

I must say, when it actually works, the vx site is much more user friendly than this piston head malarky, you need to have about 30 windows open to be able to figure out anything here.

(no offence to any piston-ites intended!)

John, it isn't bandwidth related (unless overuse has corrupted the tables).
Have a search around for MySQL Error Code 1016 and error number 145 - you need to use the MySQL functionality to repair the table

Interesting comment. Could you elaborate? (always interested in improving user friendliness where possible).

I'll be putting words into his mouth, but I guess he's talking about the formatting codes and smilies.

On the VX board, there are buttons to give you bold, italics, URL and picture entry. These give a popup with an input field that you type the URL into, and another for the text (in the case of inserting links, for example), or place the formatting code around any highlighted text in the case of bold, etc.

Similarly, there's a panel to the left of the text entry box which shows all the smilies - clicking on one inserts it into the text.

Whilst this does use a bit of javascript, it makes life easier. Don't know if scripting's an option you want to pursue tho', as I guess you cater for those that have scripting turned off...

Ah, yes. I guess I've taken that side of things for granted.

I shall see what I can do...

Also, he's probably still on a high from his first trackday a week ago...

FWIW it's probably a matter of familiarity. The VX220 board is very similar in apperance to a number of other forums that are around, whereas Pistonheads isn't. I don't find Pistonheads complicated - and once you know the smile codes for your own commonly used smiles it's just another word that gets typed...

Gotta say, I do find Pistonheads much harder to use, and also less attractive to look at (mostly down to colours and fonts I think).
The quick access to smilies and formatting is one thing. Another is the ability with the VX board to view the username of the last topic posted in for any one room, and the last poster in that room.

I'm pretty naff at computers and very new to forums and I just found the VX one very easy to learn.

Now I have been cruising the PH site I'm getting the hang of it (Plod and the Law bit is excellent, I'm definately gunna turn into a "Bar lawyer" now)

Difficult things....quoting, smiles, not work proof (as in its very colourful and obvious and I can't figure out how to make it look boring and work like), pop-ups.

I think one of the things is that PH is just so big, you loose threads you were following in all the new stuff.

Great site though, I like some of the more "liberated" opinions and just generally the banter.

This is a bad time for the site to be down
New Evo came out yesterday, which had another mention of the site ("the excellent vx220.org.uk") - don't think people who have tried to access it in the last couple of days will be of the same opinion.

Also, the site should not be down for 1.5 days (and counting) for such a simple problem. As my previous post said, the table is corrupt, and MySQL has a facility to repair it. Simple solution - back up the database, try repairing the table, try the site. With access to the database server command line that could be done in less than 1 hour.

What did EVO say? Will do some WHSmith reading later. That could explain why 20 or so people have joined since the weekend.

I wonder if any of the Evo guys have registered on the site and been posting recently...? I seem to remember they were about to start modifying their VXT, it would be interesting to know which company they use...

AMD, but they they still persist in using vauxhall for other parts, like brake pads, and whinging about how much they cost.

If the bloke reads the site like he says he does then surely he'd know that 3rd party bits are often better and much cheaper.
