I'm in northern ireland so my selection of used is minimal currently 3 for sale with a 5.0 v8. Definitely not convertible we dont get enough sun for it and probably auto. Tested a 2017 but might wait for a 2018 to come up as road tax on 2017 is around 580 per year and 2018 is 150

Double check but I think it's cars registered from April 2017 onwards that had the lower tax so wouldn't need to be a 2018 plate

Must check because the one I'm looking at is Feb 2017 and is the high tax.

Just as an example the first one I checked on Autotrader with a 17 plate was the cheaper tax bracket:

Tax changes took affect from April 2017 in that it was cheaper yearly renewals at the expense of the initial fee.

Also interested in any advice / comments from owners.

I sold a car at the weekend, and the sensible side of me wants to replace it with something cheap to run and reliable - under £20k, 40mpg type stuff.
However - the non-sensible side of me is considering a Mustang. I'd prefer a convertible - and was planning to go and see one at the weekend, but seems it's sold.
It looks like a convertible around 2017 should be possible for under £30k - which is out of budget but possible. However, I do not want high running costs - I already have a car that ticks that box, and the car I sold at the weekend also fell into that category. So what are these like to run - how much is an annual service? Are they generally reliable?
I assume it's going to drink petrol at an alarming rate given it's 5.0?

Fuel economy is heavily affected by driving conditions, my overall average is about 23mpg but that's with a fair old dose of urban driving. At a steady 60mph, not going anywhere near the accelerator I've seen a sustained 40mpg. Generally on a cross country run I'd expect a touch under 30mpg. Reliability wise, they are pretty good; pre-July 2016 V8s have issues with oil coolers failing, but most (if not all) should be recalled or repaired by now. I believe some 2018 V8s have an annoying "tick" from the engine.

I've been on plan for servicing, so have been averaging £250 per year for Ford servicing over the last three years. The oil life indicator tends to come up between official services, so I get the oil changed locally (other folk just reset the indicator), that's usually £150 from a quality independent. Official dealer servicing is only via FordStore - a franchise within Ford franchise - and the nearest to me is about 90miles away, so for little jobs I stay local. Additionally the car needed new rear discs and pads, that was £400 from a FordStore. Suspect I'll need new front discs and pads later on this year. Warranty claims for new pony projection puddle lights and a new bonnet(!) as the original started corroding under the paint on the leading edge. For context, my car is a Dec' 16 reg and has broken 30K.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know about Fordstore, but it looks like the closest is only 12 miles away.
Most of my journeys are likely to be short so I suspect I'd see under 20mpg. I guess the eco boost is always an option though.

Servicing sounds promising - £250 services would be fine.

Try and find one With the ‘ford’ extended warranty, simply a continuation of the original. £20 a month, not needed it in two years.
Try an eco boost, I had one in the USA, thankfully only for a day !
I do small mileage and the trip shows 18 mpg, that’s fine.

Just make sure if you buy one (private sale or dealer) that the oil cooler has been replaced!
This is fairly common failure and will be expensive to fix if it fails

Join the main FB groups Simply mustangs uk and Mustangs Unleashed, you'll get a whole load more info on there and they have their own dedicated sales sections where you can find out a fair bit about the cars and hopefully avoid the lemons.

Often thought about one as a replacement for the string of TVRs that I've had, last one sold a few months ago.
I sat in Sonic Blues car, it must be 6 year ago at Newby Hall, looked and felt great.
With a budget f around £15k what would I get, must be V8 and a drop top. Guess I'll end up in a high tax bracket, car around 2007/8?

(wish I could make up my mind what I wanted as a next car, keep jumping from classic Lotus to Integrale via a few other older vehicles)

£15k would see you in a decent lowish miles GT, RFL will be £265 for 12 months as it is an import

Thanks, about what year/spec would that be, when I look at cars for sale most seem to be in the £20-£30k price bracket or else £8-£11K bracket for the 6 cylinder or moon miles. Am I looking in the wrong place?

The problem is finding a good one! avoid any from a dealer on ebay stating 'fresh import from a hot dry clmiate'

Join up as mentioned to a few members clubs on FB or similar, they have for sale pages and most if not all will have been owned by an enthusiast with traceable history, for your budget '05-07' will be your price range but maybe an '08 with some miles on it,do you have a spec...auto or man? colour?

Thanks again, useful tip above. Convertible, V8, not black, silver, grey or other dark colour. Prefer blue, red probably.

Don't forget if the original list price was over £40k after April '17 you have to pay an annual surcharge of £325 for the first 5 years, on top of the annual £150 - this applies to some Mustangs.
