There is also a new addition to the T400/T440R family. Already TVR's range-topper, a new supercharged version named the Typhon is to join the line-up. Propelled by a blown 500 bhp version of TVR's 4 litre Straight Six, the Typhon is the first TVR for twenty years to feature a supercharger. It has twin intercoolers and the centrifugal supercharger is driven by a belt off the crankshaft. It also benefits from sequential injection.

It features the same carbonfibre bodywork as the T400R and T440R and also benifits from TVRs own six speed sequential gearbox. Very small scale production of the T400R and T440R has already started and the Typhon will join them in the Spring. It is priced at £79,995.

So the T400/440R still exists and the Typhon is just the name for the supercharged version?

Owww, my poor head!

Typhon.....love it what ever it is called. Sequential gearbox....does anybody know if that is linked to the throttles electronically for downshift blipping etc.

....but then what is that big slot behind it for?

Coins, nick-nacs, anything you have lying around.

I was lucky enough to get a close look at the Typhon at the show and can confirm that it is a shallow carbon fibre recess (about 1" deep), with a curved bottom.

The gear lever operates by rotating (about 30 degrees) about its base: pull back to change up, push forward to change down and push the button on the end to engage reverse. The ergonomics of the lever work very well: it means that your left hand never has to move far from the steering wheel.

I think they should have named it the TVR Teflon. Mines only a 350 and that struggles to stick.

I quite like that leaver. Certainly something different.

Although wont it make reaching for the handbrake a bit difficult?

Yep, hadn't done my homework on this one - the Typhon is the 500bhp supercharged version of the T400/T440R.

Sorry to be a pain,
But we have heard all about this tuscan R, T44444404040, Typhon etc etc with all of what the car is going to have, the sort of power outputs even though I bet the supercharged egine has never even been in a car let alone tested properly, and that its going to top 200mph and its going to be ready by this date etc etc etc. Spring 04, 05, 06?!

Well its been so long coming, is this going to be another speed 12 were it dies a death after a couple of years of talking and no road cars happen?

If your serious about this tvr, stop talking and just make the thing I am sure it will be an awesome car if you do! If your not serious about it drop it!

Cheers
Alex

No the supercharged engine has been built, dynoed and tested so it won't be another white dinosaur like the Speed 12. The power curve makes for a very driveable car so it should be good. What hasn't been decided though is the price..

Mmmm. To chose between the supercharged Typhon or supercharged Sagaris ? I tell you what though, it makes the T350C bl**dy good value for money!

Sorry to be a pain, but what's a sequential injection system when it's at home?

Typhon looks great. At last by supercharging it and giving it 500+ bhp it is worth the extra expense over a red rosed Tuscan/Tamora. I had always thought that the T400/440 with a little bit more power and being a little bit lighter than the RR Tamora/Tuscan didn't really possess the sizemic jump in performance to justify the extra price. Seems like good value at £79,995.

Six speed sequential I wonder how it will be on the road. Quaife do a 6 speed sequential which they have put in their Lotus Esprit demonstrator and by all accounts it really is a nightmare to live with away from a race track.

This means that each injector can be fired independantly. Other systems fire in groups, such as the system used for the Rover V8. The upside is that you can more easily control the fuelling for economy, idle quality (particularly with lumpy cams) and to compensate for the qualities of each cylinder. Basically it just give you more control over the fuelling of the engine. I'd suprised if the AJP8, Speed Six and Speed Twelve engines never had this before.

GMC TYPHOON (early 90's GMC SUV fitted with a supercharged 4.4l V8 good for 300hp)
Next Tiv to be christened Blazer or Explorer ??

Anorak mode on : Actually it was a turbo-charged and intercooled 4.3litre V6 with 280bhp, permanent 4WD and auto-only. It was the five-seater, luxury version of the Syclone pick-up which Mr Clarkson drag-raced (successfully) against a chipped-up Cossie.

I've driven both of them (in Saudi) and there's no doubt they're quick but I never liked that slush-box. They also had cart-sprung suspension and huge tyres which combined nicely with the too-light powersteering to give a genuine Playstation feel!

So was the speed 12 and that was never produced for the road despite numerous race versions and motor show cars.

I am sure it will be an awesome car if they do put it into proper production.

That't 'just' a 440r (i.e not supercharged, despite the name of the thread).
