Also, I've got the version with the DLC included (they are on the main menu). Are these stand alone games or are they in the main game?
They become active and available in the game after you have reached certain levels.Dawnguard - Level 10
Dragonborn - Level 20
Hearthfire (house building):
Windstad Manor - Suggested level 6 to complete the needed quest.
Lakeview house - Level 9 to receive the letter from the Jarl
Heljarchen Hall - Level 22 before you get the option to buy even if you have done the pre-requisite quests.
I'm allowed to buy a house, but at 5000 gold coins, I'm a bit short to say the least. Heading off to speak to the Greybeards now after the Jarl mentioned it. Still not sure what's going on, but I'm enjoying it
Regarding mods, I've created an account at Bethesda.net so is there any recommended for the PS4? Wouldn't mind being able to carry more tat - I'm a hoarder!

You need to sell the tat at all the local stores - in Whiterun you have the blacksmith at the entrance and up the road there is a market, with a general store on the right.... Once you've got a house you can store your own stuff safely and soon build up a collection. And just wait until you build your own house with an armoury and have several armour dummies with kit on.....

Doesn't the PS4 prevent you adding new things, or script based mods?
I don't know what it prevents as such but there is a Mods section and you log into Bethesda and select the mods you want - about 1700 of them to choose from but I can't see one to allow more than 2 adoptions.Ok, having had this on PS3 and never really bothered with it, I'm now officially hooked. I've built a couple of houses and I've just arrived in Solstheim. Currently at level 25 and have quite high skills in 2-handed and lockpicking (both in the 70s) but I have no idea about magic. Is there a guide anywhere that explains (in simple terms) about learning magic?
Magic is trial & error really. Just save before you're about to use it.
The Winterhold quests will help tremendously. The Arch Mage's robes are a great but of kit.
I'd also suggest getting Dawnbreaker if you don't have it already. Great for clearing undead from dungeons.
Archery & sneaking skills are essential too imo.

I've got Dawnbreaker (was rewarded it after a task?) but have stashed it in my house as it didn't seem very powerful! Is it recommended then?
I have lots of "Spell Tomes" and wanted to know if they can be used more than once - i.e. do you "learn" the magic spell or is it a single use thing?
Sneaking I forget to do, archery I'm getting better at but I've never managed to successfully pickpocket anyone.

Once you open a spell tome you automatically learn the spell and the tome disappears. Getting magic training 5 times each level will also boost your power, check online Skyrim wikis for who you need for the type of magic you want to use. If you want to try them out (which will increase you magic too) try basic fire/flames on rabbits and deer.
Your magic skills and how often you can use them depend on your Mana and magic regeneration (blue bar) which can all be boosted by training, experience and levelling in game and when you enter the skills tree and choose where you want to add the points you have gained, also rings and amulets can boost magic skills. Scrolls (never used them) are one use only I think.
Oh, and don't touch the chickens. You can get into trouble with the authorities if you kill chickens. In Skyrim chickens are regarded as people.

Inigo can explain to you why this is and who the chickens are really working for, they have friends in very high places.I have been playing this since the release on PS3 and now again on the PS4. I am around the same place I was after many months on the PS3 but finding levelling up a bit of a chore again.
I'm currently level 40 and most enemies pose little problem but the gear drops in chests are crap and ive had the same (blades) armour for what seems an eternity.
I really cant be bothered with smithing this time around and the tediousness of making 1,000,000 daggers to level up, so, long story short, I have just started trying out some mods....
Does anyone on here use mods and would you suggest any worthwhile ones?
I have just tried out 1 that gives full daedric emperor armour (light & heavy) plus some awesome weapons, a bit silly power wise but fun!
I don't want to cheat nor take away the gameplay but would like a decent set of armour and a good bow for the missions that I want to fly through rather than have to spend hours killing mundane enemies.
Can I use a mod to get some gear and then remove the mod and keep the bit of gear? Or, am I right in thinking that I will have to keep the mod in place and live with it or remove the mod and have to grind it out?

I'm fairly new to using mods but have added then removed a few and each time I've done it the object of the mod has disappeared from my game, I've also had a save bricked by doing that so I tend to only add mods which I know I'm going to keep now.I'm currently level 40 and most enemies pose little problem but the gear drops in chests are crap and ive had the same (blades) armour for what seems an eternity.

I'm not big on additional gear mods so can't recommend there but if you don't already have the usual graphics mods I'd recommend Skyrim Graphics Overhaul, SGO 2, Skyland, realistic water 2, true storms and wet & cold as starters to improve how the game looks.
You should also have Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition patch mod sitting at the top of your load order as it sorts tons of bugs.
Beyond that I'd definitely recommend the Inigo mod as I found he really changed the feel of the whole game for the better, the interactions with other NPCs are particularly well done. I'm playing as a Khajiit and have him with J'Zargo as a team, the interactions between those two alone make the mod worthwhile let alone Inigo's questline and all the other NPC interactions he has.
Dragon souls for perks is quite handy and there's also the faster levelling mod which I haven't tried but you might find useful.
