First GTA I ever played was Vice City. Got it as part of the bundle when I got my first console (a PS2) in 2004. Crikey so I was about 10 when I first played Grand Theft Auto. Brilliant game. Can't wait for GTA V. Depending on when it comes out I might be able to buy it legally
From looking at your posts and your car I assumed you were older than 18 NoVetec said:
Start off in a fast and/or heavy car at the car park, drive down the steps and start mowing those peds down! I have to stay I do enjoy running people over more on GTA4 compared to the other ones due to the improved graphics and the different ways that people crumple and collapse when you hit them.
I know the area you mean I think the noise the pedestrians make as they bounce off your car is brilliant, and adds to the sadistic fun.

If I had space for a PC I'd probably get it for it.
It's worth it! Some of my fondest memories from GTA4 are from some of the user made mods, nothing beat driving around in a modded Skyline mowing down civilians with my army of bodyguard strippers taking care of the police for me. Made the game that bit more ridiculous. Fabric said:

Ah, another memory. I had GTA III on PC, once I'd completed the game I had a bullet and bomb proof Mafia Sentinel in black.
Think Fido may have been bulletproof too, whilst wearing a hat.

So was I! My parents just made sure I understood the difference between fantasy and reality. I mean, I'm perfectly well adjusted now at 21. That said, disagree with me and I will steal your car and burn it out
Mine went like this:
"Mum, can I have the new GTA?"
"You can't murder prostitutes in this one can you?"
"No..."
"Okay."
My Mum was a pseudo-feminist back then, she banned me from eating Yorkie bars when they had that "It's not for girls" ad campaign.
She also thought GTA III was a racing game when she bought me that one.
"You can't have that it says 18 on the box"
"It's only because you can steal cars in it"
"Hmm okay then"
Then my Mum walked into my room a few days later and saw me setting people on fire with the flame thrower. I remember her telling me "don't you think about the fact that those people might have families" I can't remember what I replied with but she didn't take the game off me nor said anything about it again.

WRT the music, I made a playlist to match Liberty Rock Radio, just without Iggy Pop. The best driving playlist...in the world.

I have never played it. Which one is best?
Which one is best? Define best, it's a highly subjective question to people who have played it over the years. There's the gameplay of different ones, the memories they evoke, the characters, music and missions amongst other things. My advice would be to get the double pack of GTA III and Vice City, play it in that order and then get GTA 4. I had the double pack on the old Xbox, but if my memory serves me correctly I think you can download it or individually on the Xbox and/or PlayStation market.
Edit: If you enjoy the first 2, get San Andreas and then GTA 4. That covers the 3D varieties in released order.
If you want to go old school, after or before, download on PC or buy on the old PlayStation the first GTA and GTA II.

GTA London was the first I played, was awesome. Then GTA 3 was the 2nd game I got on PS2 after Gran Turismo 3 - as has been previously mentioned in the thread getting the Dodo to fly any distance was a mission in itself! Vice City, one memorable mission for me was a boat chase from the back of the huge mansion on Starfish Island with Mr Vance doing "The Lance Vance Dance" to Spandau Ballet's track Gold, so 80s! And how much was the Squallo drug boat in Vice City a copy of Don Johnson's Scarab from Miami Vice? Awesome
This thread is well timed. I bought GTA IV over a year ago when it was on special offer on Steam. Sadly my 7800GT video card wasn't up to it, even on minimum settings, so it remained "parked" until I upgraded. Well, a couple of weeks ago I finally saved up enough cash to buy a decent video card (GTX 670). All I can say is, good grief, I never knew just how good GTA could look on decent hardware (DX11, 1920x1200, all the toys turned on, 60fps). Blimey. The cars are a heck of a lot easier to steer too!
I see GTA IV has a huge number of mods, including improved textures and renderers (iCEnhancer). I think when I have done a full run through then I will have a play with some of those.
GTA3 is probably the best game, but for me Vice City was by far the better experience. I don't think any other game (or even film) has evoked the 1980s feel quite so well as VC. Alas I'm old enough to remember most of the tracks first time around, but VC just reinforces the good memories. San Andreas had a massively bigger area, and far better modelling, but it just didn't have the right feel.
