Half Life 3 confirmed at Gamescom!
Discussion
That's good timing - my work Varjo got SteamVR compatibility added a couple of weeks ago so now a AAA title to 'demo' on it.
With any luck I'll have a system fast enough to hook it up to by the time this actually ships, running SteamVR on Varjo is by rendering 4K*4K per eye as a compromise mode and that takes silly hardware to run well at the best of times.

Maybe. It remains to be seen. There will obviously be a lot of people willing to invest, but they're also alienating a lot of fans of the series. I guess they've done their sums but it just seems a bit crazy to limit a AAA mega-budget title to such a small audience.
I'm probably just bitter. I feel this is a bit of a slap in the face for fans who have been waiting for a sequel for more than a decade, only for Valve to release a prequel, that not many people can actually play.
Technology moves on. It's always been the case that a new AAA title will often mean you need to upgrade your hardware. I'm probably just bitter. I feel this is a bit of a slap in the face for fans who have been waiting for a sequel for more than a decade, only for Valve to release a prequel, that not many people can actually play.
If your graphics card wasn't up to playing a new title would you claim that the maker was alienating people who didn't have a modern graphics card?
I think this is a canny move by Valve and could kickstart a massive uptake of VR tech.
Edit:

eh was a time when PCs didnt have hardware accelerated graphics as standard and games started requiring it.
I dont see VR as being so ubiquitous though
Indeed. And, I agree. But this could be a reason to buy VR for some, and obviously they'll go for the Index if it means getting the game for free, unless there is a really compelling reason to go with Oculus or Vive. I dont see VR as being so ubiquitous though
I understand why they’re doing it but I’m still not happy about it. Honestly though I think it will eventually release as a regular game. I’ll just wait and see. Until then it’s a lost sale.
Without a pretty decent gaming PC... 1060 minimum.
Theres heaps of people out there with already built modern gaming pcs, and many more will upgrade for this, and buy a VR headset.
For that you are looking at around $200 for the GPU (low end 1060) and about $400 for a low end VR headset (rift).
IMO not a crazy outlay.

Sure, but it’s not really the same thing. A game can be available on consoles and PC. PC owners may need, or choose, to upgrade some components in order to make the game work to their standards. But this game literally cannot be played - at all - without a PC, and VR. No one can reasonably dispute that this most certainly will narrow the audience massively in comparison to other AAA titles these days.

Fair enough. And, indeed, I don't dispute that it narrows the audience. I understand why they’re doing it but I’m still not happy about it. Honestly though I think it will eventually release as a regular game. I’ll just wait and see. Until then it’s a lost sale.
However, I think it might tip some people into trying VR. It depends on how compelling the game is, really.
It's funny, for years we are told that VR won't take off, no one will develop a AAA VR game.
Valve develop one and then get critisised for not releasing it pancake.
There are a few other high quality dedicated VR games, Asgards Wrath is supposed to be pretty good, Boneworks looks very promising.
Yes, VR is niche and some people can't cope with it (my dad couldn't handle Gran Turismo on my big telly) but it's getting better all the time.
The biggest issue in my opinion is space, you need a lot for roomscale and locomotion, nothing so far has really been satisfactory if you need to move about a lot. Teleport feels artificial, slide about makes me sick, swinging arms or dragging action (Gorn style) works ok but isn't very natural. Some games incorporate the weird movement as a mechanic, so Superhot works well as does Budget Cuts and others just use a small space like some of the escape room games and I expect you to die. We're not close to Ready Player One yet.
Pretty amazing for sims though!

Yeah no argument there. One assumes that promoting VR hardware sales is Valve's primary M.O. with this rather than maximising profits from the game. However, I think it might tip some people into trying VR. It depends on how compelling the game is, really.
I'm still bitter, but I am clinging to the hope that this and/or a proper sequel are forthcoming with optional, non-VR versions in the fullness of time. Might have to wait another decade, though. By then we'll probably have Matrix-style VR, and all this headset stuff will seem like a joke
I personally think it looks fantastic!
And I’m sure I would jump out of my skin every time a head crab jumped up on me in VR too!
What I can’t get over though is the cost of all the stuff for it.
I nearly fell over when I realised the valve Index kit packages in up to over £900!
https://store.steampowered.com/valveindex
And as we don’t have a single high end gaming pc in our house, I’m sure one good enough to run it at high enough quality would be close to £5K!
So despite being initially very excited I’m now feeling very disappointed!

I've just got bits for a high end gaming rig for about 2k gbp. You could build something to run this for around 1k, and there's vr headsets from a couple hundred up, no need for an index as such though it'll be the best option

It is expensive to get even in to the bottom end of VR, I don't think anyone can deny that. But it is another level of immersion.

It will probably be only yourself & a couple of others who get to chat about this, as presumably the rest of us couldn't give a monkeys about VR.
You know, it *is* possible to get nice grapes. Maybe you need to go back to the shop and get some ones that aren't sour. & may I also refer said same gentleman to my included smileys?
