Having unlocked The Dweller and begun engineering my lasers I ran dry of sulphur, thought I might give mining a bash to try and top it up. Went out to a pristine metallic ring with prospecting and collecting limpets which got me some gold and osmium but only one unit of sulphur.
Surface prospecting is probably the best way to get sulphur. Plus you can get other things you might need too.

Use this - https://eddb.io/body put sulphur in and your nearest system, or if you are in Wyrd do that, Lister in the Wyrd system has the most content at 19.5% but if you go further out (95 ly) the LP 490-68 system, planet 2 e a has 32.4% sulphur.

Having managed to A rate my Python, turned it into a shield tank, fully engineered the drives so it would turn on a dime, part engineered my multi cannons. I went out looking for some fights. Had a scrap with a few ships, took on wings of 2/3 cobras, sidewinder and similar without much fuss. Also took out two Thargoid scouts at the same time. Felt pretty confident that I could handle my own now I had upgraded the Python.

Dropped into the CG system, joined a low intensity combat zone, picked my side and pretty much got exploded within 10 seconds. 7m re-buy. Thought I would try again, stayed at the very edge of the combat zone, picked my side and again within 10 seconds I was swarmed, then exploded.

Not a particularly accessible CG, if the low intensity combat zones are that dangerous I hate to think what the high intensity zones are like.

I'm soloing in low and high zones, on most of today if you want to add me, happily fly with.

Currently at 9m in bonds, 25% is about 11m atm and 10% is 18m...

I’ve found faster/ more manoeuvrable ships are better for combat zones. Allows the opportunity to bug out quickly when necessary, or pick off struggling targets. Big ships are too cumbersome in my experience, especially when you have ten or more NPCs targeting you.

The low and high CZ’s are bugged and swapped round. Try going to a high.

I have got 50% bonds for both factions so going to leave it there and go off finish G5 ing my corvette. Just got hull, last bit of beams and multi cannons to do.

Need to go do missions for modified embedded firmware, proto heat radiators & hull tanking stuff.

Yeah I've tried a little surface prospecting digging up stuff for FSD engineering. I found I have to concentrate hard on the SRV wavescanner so I thought asteroid mining might be easier and I need to do it for one of the other engineers too.

I've a bad habit at the moment of spending as quickly as I earn, had to sit out this week's CG in the end as haven't had more than one or two rebuys spare for the last fortnight. I think I have every module combination covered for now though and can now build up the reserves.

Have you had a look at http://www.wavescanner.net/ you can see what the lines on the scanner have found.

You need the Bronzite Chondrite, Metallic Meteorites or Mesosiderites scans. So lines at the bottom of the scanner.

Conflict zones are funny old things. I can take a massacre mission and rack up 30 kills before having to leave to get more ammo, having lost very little Hull, only to come back and get less than 10 more having desperately been forced to jump out to save myself from a rebuy.

Currently in the top 50%, might as well keep on getting bonds to at least keep me there or push me up. Left a massacre mission too late yesterday and ended up failing with 59/60 kills and loosing out on an extra 5mil.

Decided to leave open as everyone in the CG seemed to be in cutters and corvettes!

How shield tanky was your Python if I can ask?

I'm running basic 6A and two 0A boosters with Heavy Duty 1 upgrade (2xpoint defense in the other utilities) for around 800MJ of shields and like you I got smashed quickly in a CZ by NPCs.

A maxed shield tank Python will be closer to 2400MJ (6A Prismatic G5 reinforced + 4x0A G5 heavy duty) but obviously is carrying another 40T in mass, another million on the rebuy and a four week faction lock.

Anything sub 2k shields isn't a shield tank imo. There's just not enough to be a "tank".

My t9 has sonething like 750, and that's a mining vessel!

6A Reinforced Hi-cap Prismatics with three Heavy Duty 0A Super cap boosters it is then! That'll occupy the next few months saving and engineering silly

This is my shield tank, it's not using all fully engineered boosters, a normal 8A shield engineered to grade 5 with hi-cap effect, with 2 utility slots being a shut down field neuraliser and a heat sink launcher.

It's what I use when I am carrying things I don't want to lose, because it took too much time to get them in the first place.

Updated with it's new Grade 5 dirty drive thrusters with drag drive experimental effect from Palin.

Still not been hyperdicted by Thargoids despite moving things around the Pleides sector.

Purchased a python on Sunday. Bit different from the Cheiftan, hits hard but flys like a brick. Really need to concentrate on engineering more than just weapons now! Need some Meta alloy to unlock Falicity Farseer now so I can at least do thrusters and drives!

I’ve seen them offered as mission rewards for cargo runs. Had a mission for 30 000 cr last night and an option was 28 meta alloys instead biggrin

After 270hours playing and some close calls from PVPwrs I got nailed by a FDL murderhobo at the CG. Hauling 200tonnes of superconductors I failed to beat the interdiction (must learn more about that because I've never not beaten an NPC) had my 800Mj +4sys shields vapourised instantly (Not quite sure how that happened) and then failed to highwake out.

I did manage to make a clumsy FA off turn to get at least one run at him with my guns but no idea how much of his shield I got down before I was 30% hull and decided to attempt to run.

Two space cops turned up to help me but it was to late.

After some period of grumpyness about killed by someone clearly only interested in killing other players in his murder mobile and the 5mill Rebuy and further million in lost cargo it occurred to me it was actually one of the most exciting encounters I've ever had in gaming. Properly heart thumping and fight/flight/freeze adrenalin rush

Give me another 300hours to engineer my Python and I might last a full minute against the next murderhobo.loser

Also realised that hauling cargo and smashing NPCs at the CG wasn't that much fun so I'm going exploring again I think, maybe drop in on the Thargoid barnacles, or try for Sag A, or ride the Neutron highway to Colonia...

How to avoid interdictions/murder hobos...

In nav panel have high wake selected.
submit to interdiction.
FA off 180 turn.
Boost over them
hit high wake
keep boosting.
jump.

Edit to add:

Or.. alt+tab, control+shift+escape, kill process.

Combat logging, but frontier don't care, I bet if you turned on the hobo and were winning he'd combat log.

Good advice, but for now I'll go Dwarf Fortress philosophical for "losing is fun".
