There are quite a lot out there. Not sure which one I should try. For background purposes, I got bored of WoW. I really enjoyed Diablo 2, particularly the "runs". I also liked the fact I could summon things that would stay with me until they died and that helper you could kit up.

With that in mind, which free PC-based MMORPG should I be looking at?

Ta!

Runescape has to be the classic!

They have just started with TV adverts too.

Guild Wars 2 is free to play, just need to buy the game.

No but from what I remember you can summon things to help you and stuff.

Howcome you quit Wow but still want the same things from another game? I'v quit that for the second time, turns into a boring grind everytime!

I'm probably going to grab guild wars when I'v either upgraded my Imac or bought a new PC.

Keeping an eye out for Elder Scrolls Online though, thats looking good!

Oright, I only got into it because a few friends where on it, I prefer console to PC really.

Guild Wars is along the same lines but different style so its probably worth checking that out really, the free online games probably won't compare to it.

Cheers. Will have a look in detail.

Star Trek looks interesting. Might have a play with that after Runescape.

The Secret World is great fun and is now free to play. Realistic settings with zombies and vampires etc - some surprisingly compelling storytelling as well

Guildwars 2 as pointed out above is also F2P and is excellent

Runescape only gets better when you pay for membership.

Star Wars The Old Republic gives you companions that you level with and interact with (some are healers, some are tanks, etc.), they have their own storylines along with yours and you can equip them with gear the same as you do for yourself.
Free to play with restrictions, you subscribe to get the full experience (more characters at a time, more access to bag slots, bank slots, can sell more at a time in the auction house, etc.) or you can just pay for what addons you want.

Guild Wars 2 - Fantasy with a hint of steam-punk
Lord of the Rings - Fantasy
Star Wars - Sci-fi
Dungeons and Dragons On-line - Fantasy
DC Universe - Super Heroes
Global Agenda - Sci-fi
Champions On-line - Super Heroes
Star Trek - oh come on...

GW2 is my favourite and current game of choice, I played SW and LoTR when they were paid subs and enjoyed them both up to a point. D&D is a bit old school. Global Agenda didn't live up to the hype and neither did the superhero games.
Star Trek was the most disapointing, can't quite put my finger on why but it just didn't gel. Felt very clunky

GW2 is great, auto questing and auto grouping (without grouping) to take down PvE and everyone gets a share of the loot. It's also a bit more FPS in that you need to move about rather than just stand and take a beating and hope the stats save you.

I randomly came across that secret world on the internet a while ago and then read a load of reviews on it, the general consensus I read was that it was a good idea but didn't really transfer to game well.

Also it wasn't advertised at all, strange seeing that its an EA game!

Hello,

Just flicking through this post and thought I would add 'Aion' to the potential free MMO's list.

Solid graphics (assumming you have the PC for it) and free. You just download the client (free) and no monthly sub (yay!) I appreciate that it won't be to everyones taste as some consider it "yet another Korean grinder" but it does fit your criteria (and there is a pet class: Spiritmaster). There is also a hefty update with new classes due soon I believe.

Guildwars 2 is referred to as P2P - ie: pay to play, there may not be any kind of monthly sub but you still need to buy the game initially - so technically not totally free.

Apologies if this is not quite what you meant by your OP and I have misunderstood.

Cheers

More of a reader than a poster tbhsmile

But I do play MMORPGS so thought I would comment.

PS: Just thought of another which has recently announced its F2P intentions: TERA

Cheers

hehe

I'm an old school ADND geek so would prefer a more "Western" fantasy-based RPG, really. I tried that RuneScape and spent a good hour trying to feed my baby troll. Any hints? TBH I didn't really enjoy playing it. Seemed to lag or something; just didn't feel as quick to follow my commands as Diablo 2 used to.
