I'm struggling to get into the game, probably because it's not really what I thought it would be like. It just seems kind of like Assassin's Creed, look on your map for icons, go to the icons and do whatever needs to be done, cross it off your list. It doesn't feel like an organic world, especially since it's not actually an open-world game, which everyone said it was.

I've played through the first Witcher game and I love it even now, but they never claimed that was open-world.
Interesting comment because I can't quite gel with the game like I have Oblivion and Skyrim, although the cut scenes etc are very well done and the big town, scenery around the land is superb compared to the other two. Although its early days and feel I should give it a longer session to see if it is for me.

Much as I enjoyed Witcher3 I do agree...Skyrim felt like a full, living world that you were part of (although I do know it's not 'real' and is done with tricks), in Witcher 3 it felt like everything revolved around you. I think this is because the RPG elements were more rounded in Skyrim. I'm not saying it's worse (just different) but Witcher 3 is more like an interactive film.

It took me a while to get into Witcher 3, you have to get to know and care about the characters, also I think the combat gets better later on, with more options for what you can do.

I'm about 18 hours in and despite the combat mechanism being a bit clumsy it's quite enjoyable.

I like the real feel of the world and the weather for example is a really great touch- it does feel like i'm playing Kingdoms of Amalur all over again but the story is good and the characterisations and humour are enough to keep me interested for a bit longer.

oh and the wimmin are fit ;-)

eta is there a bug where you can't craft bombs despite having all the right ingredients?

Have you already crafted the bombs once? If so, all you need to do is rest with at least one form of alcohol in your possession and anything you've crafted already and used up will be replenished.

Is there anyway I can do some experience farming? I did all the question marks on the first map, then I progressed the story line to the next map, but I feel like I'm hopelessly under experienced. I got my ass handed to me by 3 drowners :/ Does anybody know where some monsters respawn (faster)?

You dont want to level too fast just do level appropriate quests. Drowners are a pain in the arse if you dont know how to fight them, all gets better once you get a shield anyhow

I've just kept going, did some quests when I got the quest to seek the witch in the forest who then took me into a dungeon. I had my first fight with the Wild Hunt, took me a bit to get the mechanics going. Now I'n level 6 though and getting better gear.

The learning curve is steeper than Fallout or Skyrim, but getting it right seems more rewarding. Great game!

Once you get to about level 10 you'll find that you're powerful enough to take on most enemies. The Witcher gear sets are well worth hunting down, each can be upgraded as you level up. I was a big fan of the cat school stuff.

You'll find updated ones, I upgraded my Cat school gear each time I got to the upgrade cap for it, need to find the plans each time round, but once you have one piece, it will detail where to find the others.

The big thing I love about Witcher 3 compared to other games is if you fail a mission there is no going back. Had to defend a merchant and the poor chap got set on by 4 dudes way higher level than me so I bailed. Mission failed.....for ever. Still managed to loot a nice sword lol

I'm relying on the level tip at quests a lot now. And manual saving, lots of manual saving...

Since the Game of the Year Edition is out now I went back to this to play the expansion packs "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine". I've completed Hearts of Stone and it was well worth getting (it's good and at least 10 hours content which is more than some entire games). Now I'm just starting Blood and Wine, which is supposed to be twice the length of Hearts of Stone, and the new area "Toussaint" looks stunning in 1440p (must be even more amazing in 4k).

Both expansions are great. I had absolutely no idea there were so many different endings to B&W, I spent ages on YT going through all the different combinations.

FWIW, I didn't get what I deemed to be a 'happy ending' with either the base game or B&W, despite my best efforts to do the right/honourable thing in most situations - which I like, it's not a B&W decision it appears to be, like it usually is in other games.

Just bought this and spent a few hours getting to grips with it.... I've been a big Skyrim fan for a long while so thought id give this a go from the recommendations / similarities

Just completed the bloody baron quest and buried his dead daughter...

Anyway, any tips or must have items to help in the game? Where to find/buy/loot better weapons/armour

What food is best to replenish health as quickly as possible?

Any help or advice to make it better would be appreciated

I found that once you got to about level 10 you're capable of taking down most enemies with relative ease and I was playing on Hard.

Tips for armour and weapons, I went for the Witcher Gear and found the cat school stuff most to my liking. You'll need to find a piece or read about the set, then it's a case of finding it all and then levelling it up. Each set levels up about 4 times as you level up and requires a few crafting materials, but is well worth it. I found the Witcher gear good enough to carry me through the whole game, including both sets of DLC.

Would be worth a quick nose here to get yourself pointed in the right direction if you're struggling, but otherwise I'd say the fun is in discovering it yourself:

I'd completed the game on PS4 but because of restrictive data caps I never downloaded the DLC. Was interested in the game of the year edition but as I understood it my save game for the original game wasn't loadable on the game of the year version. Does anyone know if thIs is still the case?

If you have having trouble with the difficulty you can simply lower that. The game has a very different levelling system to Skyrim, in that enemies do not level with you. If you go into an area a character of your level is not supposed to be in you will not be able to defeat them. This means it pays to take things easy, and move on only when you are ready. In fact, that's the best advice I can give. Take your time, explore and learn about the characters and stories, it is a character/story (rather than action) driven game. As for specifics, I found the Sun and Stars ability helpful. As others say though, and as with Skyrim, as the game goes on it gets easier and you'll soon be remembering the times when it was a challenge quite fondly.
