New PC racing sim - Assetto Corsa
Discussion
Grabbed this on sale too after reading lots of good things about it.
Struggling though, not sure if its down to wheel setup (G27 with some recommended settings from steam community) or just the way the game handles FFB but its almost impossible to slide cars around in control. Driving mostly within the grip and correcting small slides is ok up to a point, but that isn't always as much fun.
Even the Mk1 MX5 (which I know from extensive real-world experience is incredibly forgiving to slide) is a nightmare of almost uncatchable snap oversteer even at low speed, and if you do manage to haul enough opposite lock on fast enough to catch the initial slide there is no feedback for when to take lock off again, so you have to just guess or overcorrect into the wall because the visual cues are too late to do anything about it.
I'll keep trying but its more frustrating than fun after the first few hours.

I find performance cars (those on race tyres) are very difficult to catch when they let go (the tyres overheat very quickly and lose all grip) but road cars are a fair bit easier. Still have to react quite quickly with both throttle and steering thoStruggling though, not sure if its down to wheel setup (G27 with some recommended settings from steam community) or just the way the game handles FFB but its almost impossible to slide cars around in control. I also thought it was worth a punt for the price of a pint - but didn't realise that it is not VR-compatible. Still, worth it even just for the odd Nürburgring lap.
I thought it was well optimised for VR?LimaDelta said:

I'm guessing you've found the higher resolution setting for the OR? I found that the AC default OR res was awful, almost undriveable, but a change in the config gave me max res and it ran smoothly.
Sadly I found the OR made me really car sick, so I don't really use it anymore.
Currently running 1920x1080 at 80fps on the benchmark so happy with that. Motion sickness not a problem for me - I'm more used to DCS with the Rift S so being firmly planted on the ground is a walk in the park so to speak.Sadly I found the OR made me really car sick, so I don't really use it anymore.
I have to say though, while VR makes a huge difference with flight simulators, in terms of immersion, increased situational awareness etc. I can't say that driving simulators benefit in the same way. Sure a little depth perception helps, but since eyes are generally looking forwards and there is little need to check-six regularly or padlock a target I don't see it as an essential device (whereas I can never go back to flying on a flat monitor).

For those here new to AC then I highly recommend Content Manager software (they request a donation for full version min of 2.99 i think) and then download mods you want from RaceDepartment, it's drag and drop to install them, it's so very easy to use and is an alternative launcher in full version mode.

(but if DCS works OK, then it WILL cost a fortune )
Yes and no. DCS is free with a couple of decent aircraft and the most versatile map. Given modules can be had on sale for $30-60 and will require hundreds of hours of time invested to master it can be argued it is remarkable value for money. I travel a lot and spend half my time playing it with a creatively mapped Xbox360 controller which can be had cheaply enough (not going to drag my HOTAS everywhere!).Of course you can go the other way and buy every module and build a full-fidelity working replica cockpit...
I certainly wont deny you wont get your money's worth! You can spend months if not years mastering the F-18,F-14,etc. But also there are community made free planes like the A-4 & Aermacchi MB 339 that are great. And FC3 on sale is dirt cheap,IF OP doesnt puke
Also forgot to mention (but may be teaching Granny to succk eggs!) that they can try X Plane & Il-2 effectively for free by buying on Steam & getting a refund if need be

I've not put as much time into this yet as I'd like to but, what I have played so far is extremely solid. Working my way slowly through the career to begin with (about half way through the intermediate races I think) and have occasionally chucked something interesting around the nurburgring. I've managed to find FFB settings I like, which took forever but I can really feel what the cars are doing now. Just need to tweak something to give more feel to tyre slipping and I'll be there.
I've tried a couple of the track mods and they're great! They really flesh out the title - there is an almost endless supply of fresh content to play around with!
As usual, I get distracted by stoopidchallenges.com & Project Cars 2 (if you like time trials, check it out)

+1 Happy to jump on for some random combos at the weekends if you're around Speckle. I've always wanted to love AC but I keep getting dragged back to PC2 and I will also shamelessly plug www.stoopidchallenges.com default setup time trials which started right here in PH I've tried a couple of the track mods and they're great! I'd be up for that. Sunday daytime is generally a good time for me, happy to have a go at some random combos. Presumably, we can populate the grid with a combination of AI and people?https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
