Thief 3, The Cradle level. Won't spoil anything for those who havent played it but it was fkING scary!!
Graphics are pretty dated now which might dull it a bit, but the background music/score is just as terrifying as it was back when it was released.
Quite cheap to buy on steam, would recommend it!

I managed to get an hour on ZombiU and it doesn't disappoint in suspense and also some realism.
The Wii U's gamepad is used as a kind of personal GPS and radar as well as using it to manage your inventory, weapons, food etc. on that screen. The radar, whilst you think it may make things easy, actually adds to the game. It recognises any life form and you have to press it for a ping to go out and find things in the area. You often get a load of red dots and it's just a group of rats so you're preparing for an onslaught and sneaking when there's no need. A picture for those unfamiliar with it:
It's a touch screen too and I felt this invlovement with something so important to the character put you into the game more. Gameplay feels a little complicated to start with, being used to PC and Xbox controls on fast paced games it felt awkward and slow at first, but once you're used to the controls the slower pace of the game gives it more atmosphere.
It's not easy! The zombies are difficult to kill depending on the weapon. A headshot puts them down, but ammo is pretty scarce. A baseball bat is the quieter method and it takes a few strikes to put one down, so three or four in an area and it's best to avoid unless you accurately put a couple down with the gun.
Should get another hour in tonight see where the game takes me.

In terms of stuff that made you apprehensive and then jump, nothing was ever as scary as Half-Life, IMO. Primarily headcrabs, but also that massive sharpened tentacle thing in the rocket silo.
Well worth playing the Black Mesa remake/tech refresh.
Half-Life was my favourite game on the PS2. Having just upgraded from the PS2 to an XBox 360 (for the kids, obviously) I bought Half-Life 2 (The Orange Box). Fantastic fun, particularly when zombies suddenly appear behind you. Metro 2033 is next. I'm 45 this year Well worth playing the Black Mesa remake/tech refresh.

I bought a Wii U after playing Zombi U just to play that game. I enjoyed the game so much, but now the console does nothing for me. A very short sighted decision by me, but one of the most over looked games and I even forgot to mention it earlier myself. The Wii U's gamepad is used as a kind of personal GPS and radar as well as using it to manage your inventory, weapons, food etc. on that screen. Not scary in the slightest, but metal gear solid had a few jumpy moments. The alarm noise when someone catches you would always make me jump.
This when it was up full volume

And pyscho mantis freaked me out when I was younger

As above the first FEAR was very good for making you feel jumpy.
Has anyone played the Silent Hill games? I've seen the film and if the games are anything like that then it could be a contender.
Although looking at this vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luAzWcDK2cQ if it's 3rd person perspective only then it'd be an immersion breaker for me. 1st person or nothing.
It is 3rd person, I doesn't break the immersion. Did the film not being done in a Video camera Blair Witch Project-esque style detract fromt he film somehow?Has anyone played the Silent Hill games? I've seen the film and if the games are anything like that then it could be a contender.

The original Silent Hill is terrifying. No matter what your phobia (Clowns, Needles, Deamon Children, The Unkillable-instagib Enemy, Loss of Control) it's got something to freak out everyone.

You are watching characters in a film, in a game you are playing the character, we don't view ourselves in real life via a camera mounted 10ft up in the air behind us. I hate 3rd person views in any game Gassing Station | Video Games | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
