I cannot for the life of me kill the Undead Giant in one of the dungeons though. Any tips??
I had a few goes at the Undead Giant in the first chalice dungeon I visited to see how it works. Most of the attacks seem to be angled forward from it's right arm, so I tried to always be striking it from diagonal angles from behind. If you hang too close, it uses a close range move set to push you back, so dodging in and out of range is useful. I was trying to get the AI to fight a midrange battle with me, and hit a couple of cheeky strikes when I could get away with it. It's more a test of a wits as it could kill me with one or two strikes!

I went to the Nightmare Frontier tonight. I think I had a couple of fights against invaders tonight, as I noted a high large number of hunters around. The first invader I defeated was at the Unseen Village, just along from the Unseen Chapel lantern. There is a room where two hunters are (one armed with a cane and Tontitrus device, the other with a rifle spear and a cannon). There was some midget sized dude armed with claws who was fighting alongside them, when I beat him I received some blood dregs. Again, on entering Nightmare Frontier there were numerous hunters attacking me and beating them rewarded me with blood dregs, which I suppose are the convenant reward for beating other players. However, I'm not interested in arsing around with that carry on so I've put the game into offline mode until I'm clear of this dump. Looks like it should be fairly straightforward.

I also went to challenge Ebrietas tonight, I think I should be able to get her finished off soon but she'll no doubt be the toughest boss as her attack strength is immense, and her defence/HP seems very high. I used the Arcane buff on my cane which added a little extra punch to my damage. It seems you can't just stick on her tail as her sweep attacks reach right round behind her. I found the best tactic was rolling towards her back, getting into the fork of her tail and laying on one strike attack before rolling back out. Managed to get her down to about 1/3 health with plenty of vials in reserve when I misjudged her tell and got splattered for my troubles. At least the lantern is right next to the fight so there is no lengthy run up to get to her.

None of those are players, just AI hunters. You'll know when you get invaded as it will pop up and tell you the invader's name, they'll also have their PSN ID in red above their head.

I see. I had guessed at least that the two in Nightmare Frontier were invaders as their tactics were fking crap, and the AI hunters seem to do quite well against you (the first time I met the two hunters by the Amelia boss Cathedral I couldn't get near the one with the rifle spear). Oh well, I'm still going in offline today to clear out the Frontier, beat the boss and then go back for Ebrietas with a few Molotovs.

Update (miles behind most of you lads...):

Killed first boss, then killed Gascoine (after about 10 goes, as he transformed into his second stage he kept trapping me and killed me against the grave stones with some sort of combo).

Carried on to the next lantern after speaking to the weird guy (and killing him..) in the cathedral who asked me to send normal people to hang out there due to the incense protecting from beasts..

Turned left after him and met a new enemy who had a coat and cane/staff, then headed down to another place which is like a church and you pull a lever that opens a stone coffin to give stairs down into another area.

Before going down the stairs I looked around the area and met my first hunter guy next to an alter that chatted to me and i agreed with him and he gave me stuff. I then died later and came back and started a fight with him which he very very quickly turned into a one sided destruction of me as my hits did nothing to him and his wasted me (prob too low a level atm?).

I am now in the level that has the hunter on the roof top with the big machine gun who tracks you throughout the level (Old Yarnman). Played this through a good few times till eventually I made good progres. Typical of the game, I enjoyed each run through as I learned more about the level and progressed.

Question: On that level just before you get to the first ladder of two that take u up to the machine gun hunter there is a wide platform on the right with some birds on the left, that i think i met another hunter on. He ran really quickly, dived in and out of the fight and looked a little like me. It took me a few goes but eventually i killed him by hiding on the lead on ramp and timing his roll in attack to my secondary attack. Whilst the level respawns each time I start from the lamp, that hunter on wide platform on the right has not come back. Is it a case of once dead they don't respawn with the level?

2nd Question: Should I have gone another route before ending up here on this level? I took the long way round rather than taking on the fast route to the hunter with the machine gun and cleared the level back to the ladder to the start. I then went up and took on the hunter with the machine gun on the top of the big pillar. He utterly wasted me. I couldn't really get any good attacks in on him. Maybe I am way too low a level?!

I am wondering if I should have gone another route in the game that is lower level before ending up here? Or should I just Man Up and learn how to beat this hunter. I expect it will take dozens of goes based on my current skill.

Cheers and still loving the game. Dark Souls for ps3 also just arrived from amazon for a later date!

:-)

If I remember rightly there is no need to killer the hunter with the machine gun until later on in the game. Don't go up the ladder to him but there should be another route which takes you down someway or another and you can open a short cut. I'm sure someone else can explain this to you a bit better as my memory is a bit vague from that part of the game.

You can avoid the hunter on the roof. Best way is to climb up the first ladder towards him, then instead of climbing up the second ladder to the roof, drop down to the right hand side instead. Best route into the big cathedral-like building. Clear that and you're down into Central Yharnam and on your way to the blood-starved beast.

Alternatively you can just entice the hunter to fall off the tower instead, killing him instantly. I'm (semi) ashamed to admit that's what I did. See youtube for details.

Instead of going up the ladder to the gun guy, turn 180 degrees from foot of ladder and follow into the rafters of the building...

This is exactly what I did, I went into the cathedral via the rafters, killed everything in sight, got down on to the cathedral ground level and killed more and picked up the shiny thing on the alter. I then left that building and was down at a ground level of some buildings and had some werewolves to fight. I also went up some spiral staircase killing and collecting. I eventually paneled all of the enemies I could findand eventually made my way back up a ladder to right near the lamp (the one that got me into that area in the first place).

I didn't kill any boss down there after the cathedral area and lowering down to the werewolves. I think I need to go back... and find the blood starved beast.. :-)

Yes, your heading the right way to the BSB. That spiral staircase you mentioned is a short cut, you should have unlocked a door at the top which will let you go back down that way from the lamp.

Yes - I did unlock that door. That all makes sense. I will head back down the shortcut and scavenge around a bit more to find the boss.

Out of interest, I watched a guy on youtube and quite quickly he was able to buy other weapons. He bought a massive hammer weapon but I have never seen any for sale in the options that you get from the weird guys in the fountain in dreamland. He had loads of options such as torch and lantern and big hammer etc.

Have I missed something? I feel I have cleared out every possible area that I go to so far but before he had even killed boss one or maybe it was after boss 1 and before 2, he had this big hammer for sale which I haven't had an option to buy yet.

For PvP, there is a dungeon set up - glyph hizzngr3 - it's being used for PvP. You can access this dungeon pretty early, and being depth 2 ( I think ), clear out the first floor really really easily. But don't kill the boss.

You'll find a large round room on the first layer. Get in, ring your sinister bell and find a partner to try to murder.

It's great. I got 6 or 7 matches in their on a brief session tonight.

The quality of players seems pretty high, since everyone in their is looking specifically to PvP. So they know what they are doing. I was getting consistent duels at level 70, but I've read that you'll get fights anywhere between 70 and 120.

I think the etiquette is no healing. Or at least, don't heal unless the other guy heals.

BOsses and some NPC hunters drop badges when you kill them. Having these badges gives you more options in the shop.

The big hammer is available after getting the Sword Hunter Badge by killing the Cleric Beast. It's the Kirk Hammer.

Holy crap! I just beat the Cleric Beast first try!!

I've been pussy-footing around the game for a while to be fair, but tonight just had a blast and nailed it!

So I'd gone through the 'area' from Gilberts lantern and killed the henchmen in the street / bonfire. Went and knocked the door of the laughing women. Then I looked at a map and thought I can either turn right and get killed by the big dude banging the main gate, or drop down to the left and slash the hounds in cages. So I did them and remembered that I can loop back and unlock the gate next to Gilberts house and the lantern, saving me time in the future.

So I did that, went back and stocked up on gear as I had 2000 echoes.

Went back in, started at Gilberts, this time going through that gate I'd just unlocked and into the dark house. Killed those few guys, out the upstairs door and onto the big bridge.

Now I thought to myself, I want to rush past any enemies and just initiate the Cleric Boss fight, just so I can activate that lantern and the levelling system, I didn't care if I died.

But by sheer chance, I kicked his ass, first try!

Massive relief, it took a while admittedly but I finally get that feeling this game gives when you push through and get a victory biggrin

So now I can level up and grab everything I need from Central Yharnam before heading over to Father Gascoigne smile

Yes that makes sense now, thanks. I've stuck with my threaded cane and have been upgrading my "skill" many times now. I've not felt the need for a new weapon but might just buy one anyway for a new challenge.

I have killed three bosses, Cleric, Gascoine and Blood-Starved Beast. I am operating out of the Cathedral area and have opened doors so I am working my way up to the top of the Cathedral steps passing all the watchmen (lanterns and staffs. I broke off left before the top set of steps and found myself going down a kinda cave/path into an open glade that had TONNES of the standard riflemen and some weird new dog/werewolf things.

Making progress all the time and really enjoying it. Loads of moments of frustration as "YOU DIED" pops up again and again but really enjoying going back to retrieve my lost blood echoes via getting revenge and exploring about. :-).

Some enemies I still need to find tricks to kill, for instance getting them stuck in a doorway or on a ledge so I can hack them up safely.

I was beamed to Yahar'gul, Unseen Village after getting killed by a regular character (weird shawl guys who go ape and waste you sometimes with one hit, though I haven't fought ROM yet. I eventually managed to get quite far in the village level and then got killed by the big pig that I met as I left the building but have never managed to return to this level as even though I lit a lamp, I can't go back to that lamp by choice after giving up for that night and trying again the next day... Is this a one time visit location?

I found you could go back, just needed to go to the necessary tombstone once you'd lit the lamp. As I went back before beating Rom and tackled Paarl.

I had a crack at Cainhurst Castle last night, having avoided for the past week after initial attempts to take out the insect things at the gate ended repeatedly in swift and ignominious death. In the event, I just sprinted past them all straight to the gate....

What a lovely level in terms of the way it flows and makes you work to find the way forwards. I got as far as (what I assume is) the boss fight but bold hunter mask-ed back to the lantern to chop in my 50K worth of souls before trying it.

I really seem to be struggling with post-Rom Yahargul and the section following the chapel lamp. I doubtless just need to practice it a bit, and maybe level up a little more.
