No Mans Sky - looks interesting
Discussion
It does - i'm slightly worried that the "gamey" parts dont look that fun - the space battle did not look like fun and shooting stuff on the planet looked quite...funcitonal.
It's an amazing project though and i love it - i think any fans of exploration will absolutely love it. The core of the game still seems to be "find stuff literally no-one has ever seen before...and bagsy it"
I'd love for them to show the full map of all planets and then show how long it would take, say 10 million players, visiting one planet per day, to visit all the planets.

He didn't exactly sell it did he? In fact he made it look incredibly dull. Not the best demo of game when he lands on a planet and says "oh this looks boring, oh there's no aliens", shoots some rocks and then goes for a swim with some trout.
The longer this goes on the less interested I find myself in it. It just looks like a flight simulator. Where is the game? What are we supposed to be doing and achieving? It's just a lot of aimless flying to proc-gen worlds that all seem to look really rather similar

I would love you to be wrong but I share the same fears. When you look at the stick that Elite gets for being 'empty', and compare it to the apparent almost total lack of anything to actually do in NMS, I do wonder if they're ever going to get around to pulling the gameplay rabbit out from the hat.deckster said:

I like the idea of there being no real endgame except finding the centre of the universe, exploring, and doing whatever you like. Mine, sell, upgrade and end up with a massive ship and guns and whatever, or go around the planets shooting the wildlife, having the police droids after you, bounty hunter, cargo shipments, whatever.
I used to play Escape Velocity on my Mac, basic old 2d space game from the mid 90s, loved it, started off with a shuttle and a few credits, played it over and over doing missions, or ignoring them and being a pirate or whatever. Might see if it runs on the MBP this week while I'm off

What are you supposed to be doing apart from flying around doing the same thing over and over? Look's like a game that will become tiresome after 5mins imo.

The scale of this game is simply mind blowing, just like space itself. But i have to agree with you, it looks a rather lonely, boring game.

I've heard it being called a museum simulator. Seems about right from what I can tell of the released info about the game. I think it's purely an exploration game, that's the "gameplay".I don't really understand the point of the game? You fly around and explore. It has no proper multiplayer does it? It's multiplayer is kinda like the multiplayer in Journey, which was incredible in that game, but I can't see it working in this.
Journey had that same lack of gameplay, but it was such a tight, well crafted and compact experience that it worked. Journey is one of the best games I'eve ever played, this looks like it could be incredibly boring if it just goes on for hours and hours with the player not really doing much of anything at all.
In terms of "boring" you could say the same thing about fps or any other game. In COD you're just shottkng things over and over again to get bigger numbers on your screen.
In NMS you're exploring, mining, trading, pirating...whatever you want to do in a genuinely galactic sized sandbox.
Its an arcadey version of elite dangerous crossed with minecraft.
Minecraft has done rather well for itself almost certainly because it is mainly a sandbox. I bet a lot of people who have played it, and play it for a long time, have not beaten the end boss, or cared what the end goal is.

This gives a bit of insight I think:

Looks very interesting - basically a mash-up of Minecraft, Rescue on Fractalus, Elite and Wikipedia(!).
Depending on how well the controls 'feel' and how much actual engagement that they can generate from a huge sandbox, it could be a real winner. Could also fall totally flat.

Definitely got a "Spore" look/feel about it too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgFNPg9qUXI

Each planet is supposed to be totally unique and contains flora and fauna - but I wonder how varied planets are within themselves (i.e. will we have polar regions, mountains, seas, deserts etc all with different flora and fauna).
I have already seen some footage showing caves on a planet - with some narration suggesting they could go very deep. Also - some caves will only be discoverable if you actually dig for them.

What will be interesting is the staying power of it. As its procedurally generated (uber cool), will there be enough variance in what can be seen/discovered for it to last? I know Elite:Dangerous sometimes has levelled against it the charge of limitless exploration with shallow depth. Hopefully NMS will be rich in both.
No Man's Sky developer denies stealth release this week:

Release date is still TBC, but I think it could be soon. Looking forward to this, I think it'll be something you can just sit back and lose time playing
