That looks great.
So if I have the Lanhley I wonder if that gives me the South Carolina? Somehow I doubt it smile

Looks unlikely.

I thought the battleships would branch off the St Louis, but clearly not. Anyway I've re-bought the Chester, so I'll start racking up some credits on that.

It's the new tier 5 Japanese Cruiser, the Furutaka, that I'm waiting for.

People who participate in the beta test are going to get a premium US battleship to keep when the game goes live. clap

They haven't said which one yet, but still, sounds interesting.

Alpha testers who played at least 5 games got the Iwaki Alpha (AKA the "Death Pickle", due to its lime green camouflage). This is a tier 4 Japanese cruiser and the only one that can generate a smoke screen like a destroyer. It's quite a good ship by all accounts.

I had a game (vs humans) with the Minikaze, tier 5 Japanese destroyer yesterday. Sank 4 ships, including an aircraft carrier and did over 100,000 damage with torpedoes alone. Still lost. mad
That's actually what's worrying me about this game - my enjoyment of WoT went massively downhill with the introduction of the small, light/medium tanks with massive firepower from autoloaders, if WoWS starts with destroyers that can whizz about the map and deal the same damage as a battleship then I'm a bit worried that most games will end up with a couple of guys in destroyers causing most of the damage while the big ships are just fodder.

From the YouTube videos I've seen these little ships can dominate matches, but obviously I only see what they put up for us all to see.

Destroyers can do a lot of damage if played well, and against n00b opposition, but can also be out of the game in minutes from 1 shot from a BB or torp.

Yes destroyers can do a lot of damage but they need to be played well to do so. Most of them have fairly short torpedo ranges, and need to get up close and personal to stand a chance of a good hit, but doing so puts them in jeopardy from secondary armament. Whilst the IJN destroyers can have a torp range of 10km, launching them at that sort of distance makes them a lot easier to dodge.

The other thing to keep in mind with Destroyers (and Cruisers with Torps) is that a significant proportion of players will not have a clue what they are doing to be effective. So while good players will be dangerous, more often than not one of the following happens:

- Players shoot 5km range torpedo's at targets 10km away on first sight (only endangering their own team)
- Players aim using only the torp prediction rather than their brains thinking about what the target is doing, missing by a country mile
- To avoid the top two, they try to get within 1km to launch point blank and get mullered beforehand.

Well played destroyers do seem less common, but when they are yes they are devastating.

Its more that a gutful of torpedoes are the killer, wether delivered by destroyers or AIRDROPPED

I think the game is pretty well balanced all in all. Playing destroyers isn't easy, but I've played a lot against bots and they are tough sods to torpedo. When you get it right it's quite rewarding. I nailed a full health Warspite the other day with a salvo of 6 torpedo hits. Juggling the spotting and torpedo ranges is tricky and you really have to be aware of your surroundings.

If you get too close to battleships, even their secondary guns will wreck you. Cruisers with their high DPM are particularly dangerous.

I wish there was some sort of spotting damage reward for destroyers, as you're often the eyes of your team.

Patch 0.3.1 is finally out today on the US server, but it's 2.6Gb and taking me literally hooooooours to download from their hideously slow servers.

It'll be out for the EU & RU servers tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have it by then too. mad

Lots of changes with this patch, not just the new ships. The gun sounds are a lot more bassy and in fact all the game sounds have been worked on.

Watching some test footage, the ships seem to lean over much more realistically when turning sharply. No more Tokyo drift like before.

Loving my IJN destroyers, fingers off the triggers and keep outside of view range and pop off torp spreads at unsuspecting BB's, sneaky little buggers smile
Also the Gremyaschiy is great fun to play, so nimble you can dance it through incoming torps whilst unloading it's artillery.

The tier 5 Japanese destroyer is definitely a keeper. I think of the 3 premium ships, I'd probably get the Gremyaschiy as well. Jingles put up a review of it yesterday actually.

It took until 2 am to finish downloading the update, so I've only played one game so far. I had enough credits for the new tier 3 Battleship, USS South Carolina, so I took that out for a go. It's quite like the Japanese tier 3 Kawachi really, but has its four turrets on the centreline. When you hit something it makes a horrible screeching, wrenching metal noise. I didn't take any hits, so I don't know what that's like yet.

The new Japanese aircraft carriers branch off the Kawachi, which I kept because I like it. You'll need a little over 5K XP to unlock the first carrier.

I just need a couple thousand more XP on the Kuma to get the new tier 5 Japanese Cruiser. The patch came with a day's premium account, so that'll help.

I unlocked the tier 6 Japanese destroyer some time ago, but didn't buy it. I hear the higher tier ones aren't as good as the American ones.

The gun sounds are better I think, but there's still not enough smoke and flames from them. I want a bit more of this:

Those wire masts kinda spaz out the rendering somewhat. laugh

They're relatively light weight, but maybe a ship isn't the best place for them. They'd flex around in high seas and when firing the big guns. One of them collapsed on USS Michigan in a storm, so they were phased out or replaced with British-style tripod masts.

We may actually see some on contemporary Russian ships when they come out. The engineer who came up with design was actually a Russian, Vladimir Shukhov.

There's a huge 160 meters (525 ft) TV/Radio tower using this "hyperboloid" design in Moscow called the Shukhov Tower, which was built in 1922.

The South Carolina was a bit dull I found, but the tier 4 USS Wyoming is more like it. I think this one may be a keeper.

It has six of these 12" gun turrets down the length of the ship, so a broadside can be quite devastating.

With the new patch, you can really see the effect of armour now. Shells will bounce off, especially if you angle your hull, like in World of Tanks. I had a tier 7 Atlanta bounce shot after shot off me, then I straightened out and sank him with a full broadside as he tried to pass. biggrin

Just free XP'ed my way to the New Mexico battleship, not as fast or has the range of the Japs but does have far far better maneuvering and with a range extender on the fire control only looses out by 3km to the Japanese ships.
Also.. may have spotted a certain Jingles in his Cleveland and given he was on low health and out in the open, decided to put him out of his misery and then apologize hehe

Poor Jingles, I hope you weren't "targeting" him. He gets a little irate if you do that. laugh

I had a couple of notable games yesterday.

A couple of minutes into a game with the Minikaze (tier 5 Japanese destroyer) and the computer just restarted out of the blue. I'm not sure if it was the game or what, as it has crashed to desktop once before with this patch. By the time I got back into the battle, I was nose first into an island with an enemy Omaha cruiser shooting at me from the side. In the nick of time I switched to torps and sank him with a close range spread. A little later I sank a Kongo, which was their last ship. Despite the crash I managed to finish 2nd on XP.

A bit later on I had a game with my own Omaha cruiser that I wish I'd been able to record. I was dodging aircraft torpedoes left right and centre, even deliberately running into an island to avoid them at one point. While doing this I was shooting and launching off my own torps as fast as I could. I'd just sunk their carrier to my right when around an island to my left a Fuso battleship appeared at really close rage. I was able to torpedo him with the launchers on the other side fortunately. A little later I sank their Wyoming battleship as well. In all I'd sunk 5 ships and shot down 5 aircraft. I was knackered after that and called it a night. shoot

Apparently there is a way to hack it to enable replays, so I need to look into that.
