You can berry up a friendly gym still, which earns you dust as perhaps XP.

Spinning a friendly gym gets you a bonus item too.

In other news, it seems that returning, defeated Pokemon come back with 1 coin per complete hour they were in place defending a gym. I've had three back from this morning, and they follow that rule.
Mine lasted all of 3 minutes in the gym....bloody city pokegyms!

For me in the past, it has always been about taking them in the evening on the way home from work, because the school kids take them back each morning when waiting for their bus.

Every so often there will be a raid at a gym whereby a HUGE boss Pokemon will appear. 22,000 CP been shown in the teasers. Up to 20 trainers can battle it for the chance to catch something.

Think it is level dependant. We are 32 and have one, my other son is 27 and gets a message they are not yet available for his level.

I'm level 31 and it's not yet available for my level. If it's restricted to level 32+, it's hard to see many teams of 32+ being able to get together to raid.

From the bits I've read it seems the level requirement for raids will gradually be reduced.

I don't think there's many legitimate players who are above level 35.

Would be awesome to see 20 real players converge on a gym for a raid! I think in the last year, I've "met" less than 10 other players round our local area.

Pretty much the same here just now.

19,000 Gengar, only my 2 boys, no one else.

Gengar was nearly down, just as the clock ticked down to zero, just as all our fighters fainted. Timed out.

Needs more players to take a raid down.

Believe raids have been opened up to level 25+ trainers now.

Excited about the new gyms my son and I headed off into Lincoln where there were about a dozen in various stages of battle.

We made the basic error of taking on the first one we came to and proceeded to get our asses handed to us by a 27,000 CP Venusaur which we hardly put a scratch in.

Later we came across a gym with a lowly 5,000 CP Bayleef in it, so he paid 79p for some gold coins and trashed it. After the dust settled with golden razz berries, special candies and premier balls, he came away with a 900-odd CP Bayleef, which he didn't really need.

By the time we came away, all the battling gyms seemed to have died down back to their normal status. I don't know if it is just one battle per gym per day or if something else may crop up later today.

I don't think I'd pay any more money to take part in this as it looks nigh-on impossible to get anything decent out of it. God knows what it would have taken to put that Venusaur down. There were two other players going at it with us but it only looked to have dropped 5% for all our efforts.

My two boys just did a raid - 22,000 CP Muk, which they beat quite comfortably. They got rewarded with a 1,500 CP Muk.

But, similar problem to before, when we took down a gym it let us put one Pokemon in then wouldn't let a second be placed as it insisted the gym was under attack, despite no one being anywhere in sight and the gym's health not decreasing. That must be a (really quite irritating) bug in the game?

Edit to add - quick google:
"Some Trainers may experience a bug where they are unable to assign a Pokémon to a Gym shortly after claiming the Gym for their team. Attempting to assign a Pokémon returns the error message: “The Gym is under attack! Try again later.” We are actively working to resolve this issue."

I won my first Raid just now. Three of us took down a 26K CP Venusaur on the second attempt. It's all still buggy as hell though.

Had you already received your maximum daily allowance of 50 coins?

Also, if a gym is in the one hour period of the raid, you can't add Pokémon (or I presume if you're a rival team you can't battle it).

Spent some time yesterday with the usual locals from our community and found the raids to be a lot of fun that way. Once we'd figured out the tier system (the more faces on the boss egg, the rarer/more powerful it will be) we stuck to 3 and 4 star bosses (Snorlax, 2x Lapras, Machamp), usually with a group of 10-15, pretty much all of us being L32 upwards and had little trouble defeating them.

My first raid of the day, I couldn't get in with the rest of the team due to EE maintenance, so I took on solo 10 minutes later, a 2 star Weezing. Just managed to kill that on my own (L38).

By our logic we worked out that you're getting a good IV Pokemon from each raid, at L20 (same level as an egg hatch). Premium pass is worth 2/3 of an incubator, or equivalent to 2 hatches, but you can at least choose what you 'hatch' and you can get evolved Pokemon from them. Put another way, you could use your incubator and get a Gligar, Sudowoodo and Pineco from 3x 10k eggs or you could use a raid pass and get a Snorlax without the lottery.

Not 100% sure on the gym system yet. It seems to benefit people who didn't put as much time into the gyms. My previous strategy was to get a car of people together, do the village gyms just beyond the outskirts of town and sit in them constantly for 100 coins a day with minimal effort. I can't complain at the income, yet it did seem a little boring. Now it seems less worth the effort to sit in the stagnant gyms and get zero reward but also far too easy to sit in 5 on the outskirts of town for a couple of hours each and get given a guaranteed 50 coins.

If nothing else it does at least seem to have revitalised a few players who had got bored, the diversity of Pokemon in gyms is nice to see and the inter-team camaraderie we have here is at an all time high, we have been wandering around all weekend in mixed team groups of 6+ and enjoying the game smile

Just to add separately there is a get around to the 'gym under attack' error when adding Pokemon. Once you've all finished battling, go to add a Pokemon as usual, choose which you want to leave and wait on the 'Are you sure you want to add...?' screen until all of your teammates are at the same point, then add them together. Worked flawlessly for me and two others last night once we figured it out.

Really enjoying the new gym updates. Lot more dynamic and worth exploring to find gyms for casual-ish and non-spoofing players like myself. Great to drop a relatively rare Pokemon in a gym (one which was all but useless under the old system) and watch it earn coins, even if it's only for a few hours.

Coin accrual is up massively as I can easily find gyms to populate or take down. I think my most concurrent gym placements under the old gyms system was five and commonly only one or two, so being able to get 20-50 coins a day without too much effort is a big change.

Only done one raid so far and while I defeated the 5,207 Croconaw (well, 95% by me, 5% by a Mystic player) I didn't manage to catch the thing afterwards. Didn't cotton onto the fact that I'd just been given golden razzberries! rolleyes

Raids seem a lot more frequent than I was assuming, I thought they'd be a 'see one a couple of times a week' thing but there were three or four during my lunchtime stroll. Perhaps this is to get people used to them and they'll drop back after a few weeks?

It seems that the coin thing is 1 per 10 mins, to a max of 50 per day, when the Pokemon returns.

Got 10 today so far, but certainly would encourage me to pop out late in the evening and chuck one in overnight. I think I need a dog to justify a late night stroll.

Yeah, a late evening drop of a few low CP 'mon would be the best tactic. No point in them being tied up for days now, you want them back within 10-15 hours really.

The only thing is I keep forgetting to spin at gyms!

Gyms are a little too easy to be honest, good for the casual player I guess as there aren't any barriers to entry (apart from finding one with a space) but the art of prestiging is gone...

Well considering raid passes are 100 coins, I think they're a good money maker for Niantic!Raids are awesome, really great feature which encourages socialising. Done a couple of level 4 ones (which require at least 5-6 strong players) and some level 3 (easy enough with 2 people). Rewards are excellent, picked up a couple of TMs and lots of rare candy!

They're great value vs Incubators. Well worth keeping a minimum of 200 coins in the wallet for when you stumble across a good event...

I'm also a little surprised at how many raids are happening.

I used up my daily free raid at lunchtime - despite there being 5 of us, we couldn't take down the level 4 25,000 CP Blastoise as we didn't have the firepower during the time allotted.

Now, I can see about 5 gyms from my office and 3 of them are either having a raid or a raid is expected to start soon, including a few easy ones I could have taken down by myself (a level 1 1,165 Magikarp).

I am pissed about this update.
I had a dragonite in a gym for three days.
Yesterday I put another Pokémon in a different gym and he got returned within s day and gave me fifty coins.
Dragonite got returned tonight and for all that time gave me zero coins. It's a bloody stupid system
