Sony Playstation VR
Discussion
Originally I said I wouldn't get one as the tech didn't seem quite there yet, it's easy to read tech reviews etc and get lost in the numbers BUT after trying one at a mates house who'd had the foresight to pre-order one, I was literally blown away and had to have one. Unfortunately they were sold out everywhere and after a few weeks of fruitless searching I'd given up.
However I happened to stroll into a Smyths toy shop a few days before Christmas and guess what I spotted sitting behind the games counter? Yep a PSVR set. I quickly got in line thinking it was probably an empty box or worse, the person in front of me in the queue would nab it right before my eyes but the gods smiled upon me and it was mine.
Got it home and these are my thoughts, I'll get the bad stuff out of the way first.
1) Setting it up is a faff, you've got the PS Camera and associated leads, you've got the PSVR unit and associated leads, power cables, usb cables and hdmi cables up the gazoo. As another poster said, this is the main thing that prevents me from using it more. Once they've got wireless nailed it will be A LOT better.
2) There aren't really any games in the true sense, it's mostly tech demos for now which means while it's a great experience their isn't any longevity in any of the titles.
3) The resolution isn't quite there yet which can lead to some blurring and groggyness\motion sickness especially when you first use it, however this soon passed after a few goes and really isn't a big issue after that.
4) The amount of immersion can tire you out as you sort of suffer from overload so not really conducive to extended lengths of play if you are a hardcore gamer, not sure if this goes away with time but I tended not to play it for more than an hour at a time.
The Good Stuff
OK as an experience it really is mind blowing, once you are settled in and playing, all the concerns about faffing around with cables, poor resolution\refresh rate just go out the window.
You are actually there, in Star Wars VR I felt like I was sat in the cockpit of an X-Wing, look out the side and you can see the attack foils and you lazer cannons firing, look behind you and you can see your seat and the little R2 droid sat behind you. Swoop down around the big ships and battle it out with the tie fighters.
In Battlezone look around and it actually feels like you are sat in a futuristic tank, I caught myself actually ducking and flinching when I took some heavy hits.
In DriveClub you are sat in the seat of a Ferrari, OK the resolution isn't great but that doesn't really matter as soon as you start racing. Look around at the steering wheel and the windowns, move your head to check your mirrors, use the 3d information you are seeing to position the car into corners, hit the apex etc, I had DriveClub before I had PSVR and I don't think I've ever played as well, the 3d immersion just helps you place the car so much better.
Finally playing the first hour demo of Resident Evil and it's safe to say I st my pants at how atmospheric and scare it is, my heart was literally beating hard by the end of it.
VR might be in it's infancy but it is more than good enough to fully immerse you, it just needs a few good proper length triple AAA titles to do it justice which should be coming in the next few months. This really is the future people and normal gaming just feels very tame in comparison after experiencing it.

That X-Wing VR mission for Star Wars Battlefront had me giggling like school kid on Christmas morning. I was sitting in a bloody x-wing fighter...absolutely brilliant and I highly recommend it to anyone with VR. It's something you can just play over and over, fly around the fleet through asteroid fields, amazing stuff, what I've always dreamed of doing since x-wing vs tie fighter. You have to lean forward to look around the bombing target sight. Lean down to look closer at dials, lean left and right to get a different look at ships. Simply awesome, better than the film
They've got Eve Valkyrie which is a full space shooting game. I tried the demo and while it's very good, it's just not Star Wars. It does have multiplayer modes though which would be a real blast imagine playing with or against your mates in VR!
My current wish list would be
The full Star Wars VR Game including Death Star Trench Run, Endor, Tatooine\Beggars Canyon Pod Race etc
A 3D RPG, something like Dragons Age, Witcher or Skyrim
A first person shooter, preferable Battlefield, imagine slogging on foot, shooting it out on one of the big BF maps then jumping into a tank\attack chopper\airplane all in VR!
A proper Robot fighting game, they have Rigs but it's a sports game at it's core where as I want proper Mech combat game.

Heads up to any PSVR owners, Dirt Rally will be updated for VR soon, the complete game fully playable in VR! You can pick up the game for ~£16 in the PSN sale at the moment which is a bargain anyway, the VR DLC is going to be £10.
Also confirmed that it has PS4 Pro enhancements.

My workmate brought his PSVR to mine yesterday to have a play. I really enjoyed it, after playing drive club vr with my wheel it was in heaven, the graphics where ok but being able to look into the apex and follow the line naturally it was great, and I didn't like drive club for anything other than graphics.
Battle zone was great fun too, I hope they make a Battlestar Galactica game, that would be amazing in be.
I'm now looking at getting myself one and have already downloaded trinius vr on pc so I can have regular races with my friends. 100% I'm pressed. V excited about the star trek bridge crew game too.

Anyone else's PSVR sat around gathering dust? I only get it out to show off to guests now and again but rarely play with it myself (oo-err missus). Still waiting for that killer game to come out. Resident Evil 7 was released a couple of days ago and is very good by all accounts but I played the demo and it freaked me out way too much so not really sure I could sit through 10 hours of that.
So what have you played of the current crop of games that is worth buying? Alternatively what games are you looking forward to?
My current hit list is
World War Toons - Basically Team Fortress in VR
Grand Turismo Sport - It's Grand Turismo in VR, need I say more?
Final Fantasy XV - Always been an FF fan, keen to see what they do with it in VR
Farpoint - Looks like a cross between Starship Troopers and Halo in VR, what's not to like?

Heads up, the PSVR bundle with Gran tourismo is currently £249 in the Black Friday sales,
I was reluctant to get one previously but at this price it becomes very tempting, I think I’ll go ahead and order one.
Sony have dropped the rrp down to £249 ... this means that there *might* be retailers who go lower, so keep your eyes peeled.I was reluctant to get one previously but at this price it becomes very tempting, I think I’ll go ahead and order one.
