I haven't seen a thread about this, and since the pre-orders start tomorrow, I thought I would start one.

Is anyone interested in this hybrid console-handheld device?

It will cost £280, which is in a similar range to the more powerful (but not portable) competition. I think the battery life and third party support will be key to its success in my opinion.

Update after the conference (which can be seen at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntzz8O7SpWs)
  • March 3rd release date
  • £280 (inc. dock, charger, hdmi cable etc. but without a bundled game)
  • Online will need a subscription similar to psn/xboxlive
  • No region lock
  • Between 2.5 - 6 hours battery life
  • There appears to be only 2 launch games - Zelda and '1-2 Switch'

I hope it is that sort of price or it'll be dead in the water. Seeing as a 3DS XL is £180, The estimated prices look cheap in comparison. I'll check the games before I decide on this.

That controller looks like a boss-eyed dog.

I'm interested, will depend on what games they have ready for release day more than anything else for me. Amazon pre order at 0700hrs.

Game have changed the price now from £999 to £279. I know there was a press conference earlier so assume this is the price bit top heavy maybe for good sales figures.

Pre-order placed with Amazon... and fingers crossed for something special from Nintendo this time.

Does the price include a game or is it console only? If it's console only I think it's a bit steep.

Console only, i am a little worried people will think its too much and there will be a low take up leading to not many games being developed. I know its the main selling point but i am surprised there isnt a cheaper version without the second screen but allowing you to add it later. Not sure how they would do this though.

Seems a bit steep but let's see what it's like on release. Hopefully it's a great success.

Bit disappointing that the handheld screen is only 720p, especially considering that even lowish end phones now have a 1080p screen.

Personally would prefer the better battery life this should bring as apparently they throttling back the processor when in handheld mode.

That controller layout looks awful. In the top pic it looks far too bulky to be comfortable. More pertinently, on the right hand side the d-pad is above the thumbstick. I really, really can't see that being an easy configuration to use. Surely you'd be constantly inadvertently nudging the thumb stick whilst trying to press the buttons? In my case i'd imagine going to press jump and ending up staring at the floor. I'd definitely want to see how it feels in practice before buying.

Really disappointed, I was looking forward to it and all set to place a pre-order. After those announcements though it's too expensive and they haven't got enough games at launch (think there are 4 in total).

As it's really Zelda that I want, I'm happy to settle for playing that on my Wii-U instead.

May well pick one up in a while, especially if they do a bundle with the new Mario when that arrives later in the year.

Having bought our son a Wii U a couple of years ago, Nintendo can go and fk themselves if they ever think I'll cross their palms with my silver again. They should start making games for other consoles and stop pissing about now.

Son plays mainly on my PS3 & PS4 now - he wants an Xbox like most of his mates for his next console.

They got lucky with the Wii and the DS, but the world has moved on.

Yes, quite why they persist in messing about with new consoles every five years is beyond me, it must be a Japanese pride thing?

But, at £200-£250 I'd be all over one for my kids (and me wink) if the games and app support are there.

I'd like to know if it'll have apps for Netflix etc and will it be able to web browse.

I quite like it nice neat and compact piece of kit.

I think it will do well.

280 pounds. What on earth were they thinking? I had in my head a range from 199 - 249.

This might well be DOA.

Did you get to have a go on it? Or were you watching presentations etc?

Surely that's a crazy price? Never actually bought a console but my girlfriend says she always enjoyed Mariokart so I'm looking at one of these, but 280 + 50 for a game seems very high

Liked the look of this when saw a promo a while back (and then promptly forgot all about it). Perhaps a little expensive but the 3DS XL is still over £150.

Bottom of the description on Amazon it says they have sold their allocation of pre-orders, so further orders are based on an unknown resupply date.

Zero interest in this at all.

£280 isn't unreasonable, but the cost of the peripherals is just horrendous ($90 for the dock, no UK price yet but expect it to be at least £80). Also just 80 games in development? Given the PS4 had 180 on launch, that's worryingly small as you can fully expect many of those to be JRPG or tiny indie messaround games. Only Zelda is remotely worth bothering with on launch day, Mario isn't here until Xmas, and no Metroid at all? And as much as I love SF2, having that over SF5 is just bizarre.

720p for the screen may make sense from a battery POV, but 3 hours on Zelda (their example) still isn't a lot. Mobile phones have 1080p these days, with smaller batteries with plenty of graphical grunt: In a year, or two years, 720p is going to be utterly dire. The same way we view the WiiU and it's 480p screen now, I dare say.

I just want this to bomb so Nintendo can go third party and do what they do best: Produce great games. Their hardware simply isn't good enough any more.

Just found quite an interesting article on the success or otherwise of Nintendo's hardware from Game and Watch to Wii U here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-38595543

Seems they have an impressive history of boom and bust. I would never have thought the original Wii outsold the N64 roughly 5:1. The N64 was awesome yes
