Thanks ever so much guys! That's really very helpful indeed!
(The cost of the annual subscription to play online is fine. I once managed to rack up £800 worth of dial-up internet fees in a quarter back in about 1999 playing Age of Empires ....You can imagine how that went down with my wife! )
Many thanks again....I'm going to look at all the suggested options now.

Wow! Just been looking on YouTube. I used to think F1 2000, TOCA Touring Car Challenge and Colin McRAE's Rally Challenge were pretty good back in the day but things have really moved on!
So, at the moment and being a returning noob, I'm leaning towards GTS on PS4 with the foldable Challenge seat and G29 wheel. Project Cars 2 looks a little too challenging for me to take on-board at the moment.
So, for about £600 I'll be 'in'.
Just need to figure out how to (discretely) snaffle 600-squid!

Assetto Corsa has lots of free third party mods (cars and tracks) if you play it on the PC. Dunno if you can access that all on consoles, though.(The cost of the annual subscription to play online is fine. For realism rFactor2 IMHO. The tyre physics are a big part of the sim and they worked on this for a long time on rFactor2. They also spent a lot of time working on the surface models and the tracks evolve over time which is IMHO good.
With a good wheel its hard to beat.
The only minor thing I would pull it up on is the shadows, they are 10 years behind.
RF2, 2016 F1 mod, decent headphones and Vive VR headset..... hours of fun!!
Another shout out for BeamNG. Its very system intensive, more than 4 or 5 cars will push most systems into low FPS.
But they are evolving all the time and its very very good. The cars have full soft body physics plus realistic suspension components with variable settings, drive shafts, wheels, tyres, radiators, clutches, low range and high range gearboxes, diffs with locks, turbos with variable boost pressure, realistic automatic, manual and DC gearboxes, realistic fuel and water and a lot more!!
You can literally spend hours playing around with one type of vehicle.

That's the set up I have for GTS, I'm new to driving games so can't really compare to anything else, but I really like it!So, at the moment and being a returning noob, I'm leaning towards GTS on PS4 with the foldable Challenge seat and G29 wheel. I made the mistake of reading the "top notch sim" thread, I can see a pc and vr in my future

Reviving this thread, I did a little bit of McRae Rally using keyboard about 14 year ago, nothing since.
Young son gets a new PC for Christmas, I'm considering a driving game to add to it. Presume I'l need a wheel etc too but what is the current recommendation. Something simple and no subscription please?

iRacing for me also, Unfortunately also the most expensive with its subscription + puchases model, But its the only sim where your heart will start racing sitting on the grid. Start panicking when you see someone gaining on you in your mirror etc.
For actually racing, there isnt really anything to compete with it. You have SRS with assetto corsa but even that seems barely a step above racing on forza/gran turismo with wild cars flying about everywhere.

Ive resigned myself to only racing when in a good/neutral mood these days lol.
I like racing the mx5's and skip barber, but with being rookie/d class series, Getting a clean race is 50/50. Althogh VR is helping to an extent, I can now see the dive bombers coming abit better or i get a better look at them as they swipe me rear quarter.
Took this win at lime rock park a few weeks ago, Think it was 0.08 across the line on the timings, Ignore the silly paintjob. I wanted to see if i could make my own in photoshop, thats the best I could come up with.

I’ve actually gone back to racing the MX5, class B here but don’t get much time spare to race. Was doing a lot of GT1 and GT3 stuff but couldn’t commit the time to making my setups competitive.
Went back to racing the MX5 and I’m loving it, close racing that you can get into without needing to spend hours testing. Have won a couple of races at summit point this week now I’m getting used to the h pattern gear shifter, hard work but really immersive.
The Porsche Cup racing is good as well.
Maybe we will come across each over at some point in the Mazda!

If you are considering a jump to PC, I have some bits for sale.
GTX970.
ASUS Z170-P.
Core i5 6400.
I had a bit of upgrade fever
He's getting a new PC for Christmas and I'm thinking I might "borrow" it when he's at school....GTX970.

Core i5 6400.

But might be interested in a wheel/pedals/game if they were to come up cheap due to an upgrade...
