I’m in the market for VR headset and would appreciate some advice. I’m mainly targeting gaming with PC and from my research Occulus Rift S and Quest 2 are the ones to go for. Well, they are the ones within my budget
Space is an issue as I don’t have much where my gaming PC is situated. I also experience motion sickness sometimes but increasing FOV helps.
From reviews I’m leaning towards the Quest 2 however I can’t seem to find any in stock? Some on Amazon but it’s way above MSRP.
Thoughts?

I can recommend the Quest 2. A really user-friendly implementation of VR with a lot of potential and flexibility (as you can use it as a PC headset too). The stand-alone ability is just fantastic. The only big shortcoming is the approx 2 hour battery life in stand-alone gaming.Space is an issue as I don’t have much where my gaming PC is situated. Looks like it has fallen victim to 'new tech buying mania' unfortunately - I was able to preorder a couple of weeks before release day from Amazon, no issues. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S took the focus away at the time.
(BTW. FOV is quite narrow on the Quest 2 - just over 90 degrees).

I'm sure I saw it in stock at Amazon (direct, normal price) earlier this week.Looks like it has fallen victim to 'new tech buying mania' unfortunately - I was able to preorder a couple of weeks before release day from Amazon, no issues. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S took the focus away at the time.
I pre-ordered a few weeks before it came out, but I was thinking about changing from 64gb to 256gb so kept checking stock up until Christmas and it was generally always in, which surprised me given all of the problems with stock for PS5, XSX and the graphics cards.
It looks like they had better stock of these, but have finally run out now. Hopefully, they'll be back in soon.

Thanks, 90 degrees FOV should be fine for me. Looks like it has fallen victim to 'new tech buying mania' unfortunately - I was able to preorder a couple of weeks before release day from Amazon, no issues. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S took the focus away at the time.

I’ve seen Linus reviews on both Rift S and Quest 2 and he seems to favour Quest 2 as well. Suppose the only thing is that I need to buy the cable to connect to PC at circa £80 as I would be mostly gaming on the PC. It would be cool to have 100” view of my desktop too
2 hours life is fine for me as I would need a break anyway as I imagine VR would be more taxing on the eyes.
If only I can find somewhere with stock at normal price. Sellers in Amazon listing it for over £450.

As noted in the FS2020 thread you don't need to buy the genuine Oculus cable - any quality USB C to USB C cable will do.I’ve seen Linus reviews on both Rift S and Quest 2 and he seems to favour Quest 2 as well. Cheers I’m guessing for the Quest 2 most of the processing is done by Occulus and not the graphics card? Rift S requires DisplayPort connection but not the Quest.
I can find stock of Rift S at normal price but general feel is that the Quest 2 is much better.
90 degrees FOV is actually very narrow.
A Vive is 110 and that is like looking out of pair of binoculars with no peripheral vision. That is fine, you just have to move your head a bit more than normal, the only really viable wide FOV is the PIMAX and that's still a bit flaky on the software front and you need a big ol' PC to run it effectively.
Not sure what impact FOV has with regard to motion sickness. Usual culprits for causing people to feel ill are framerate, micro-stutter and poor tracking. It takes a lot of people some time to gain their VR legs. I nearly gave up as I was feeling sick after 5 minutes, I just acclimatised after a while. Poorly optimised games and games with 'smooth' locomotion still make me ill after a while but cars, planes, spaceships and teleport locomotion I can play all day.

Nice one! Thanks I suppose with Quest 2 I can also use it n my lounge where there are more space. Heard that it's now possible to use Quest Link (?) to play the games on my PC as well so looking forward to that.

edit: Looks like IPD is important for VR, I've found an app (EyeMeasure) which seems pretty accurate (compared to measurements from a ruler)

My favourite app/game is Google Earth, it is jaw dropping on a decent pc and a Quest 2, its like being in a vivid flying dream.
If you havent tried it, go and download it, it is amazing and its free.

The Quest is so much better than my Rift was, given that to my son.

Curious though, how can the USB C cable offer better quality compared to the DisplayPort cable on the Rift S. Suppose I will find out soon.
Evening all. My son has done very well at school and just been accepted for University. He's very into gaming on his PS4. As a token for his achievement I would like to give him a VR Headset. What would you guys recommend as being the best available at present. Also, will the PS4 be up to it or should I be looking at getting a PS5 to go with the headset. Any thoughts?
