Thanks. I think I'm getting my head round it now. Ideally I'm thinking he would be able to download games for the quest 2 on to his laptop then transfer them onto the quest then play the quest independently of anything else. Or is it more complicated than that. Christ. It was so much easier with my Sega Mega.

You download direct to the Quest for its own stuff, but Oculus also has a PC only games library that is a lot bigger that you'd need to plug the Quest in to play.
Thanks. So without using a PC it may be better to use the PlayStation VR with his PS4 for more choice of games. His laptop would not be up to the task. Sorry for all the numpty questions but it's a new ball game for me and trying to get my head round the options. Really appreciate the advice everyone. Compare the list of titles and then have a ponder. A Quest 2's screen will be a lot better.

We got the PSVR last year and used it at most three times as the amount of cables and things that needed connecting were a complete pain. Got the Quest 2 just before Christmas and much more fun being cable free and the whole family like to have a go on it.
With the link cable it's possible to play loads of other games but you need to connect to a PC - Assetto Corsa and Flight Simulator both v good on it.
I'd be going for a Quest 2 if it were me, even without a decent PC, purely for the freedom of playing it anywhere and not being tethered!

Desicion made. Will go for the quest 2. To be honest, it's a lot cheaper than I was expecting. Was thinking about £500 plus originally. Looking forward to having a go myself. Never suffered from motion sickness but we shall see. Thanks guys. Been a great help.
Definitely the right choice in my opinion.I’ve got both the Quest 2 and the PSVR and the Quest 2 is miles ahead - more games, better games, runs wirelessly, much better resolution.
The fact that it can connect to a PC to run games is a (welcome) bonus really, I can imagine most people will only ever run it as a standalone.

Budget for a Oculus Quest 2 Elite Strap as well (an eye watering £50). (the knock-offs are starting to appear now as well, for a little less)kowalski655 said:
I didn't know that.
Is it fast enough to stream games?
Not used it myself as my Q2 doesn't get enough use - YT overview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRPpdwccb2UIs it fast enough to stream games?

Some people reckon it's faster than tethered. You need to get your PC on an ethernet connection to clear the airwaves and you have to be in the same room as the router.
It seems faster to me, though I have a relatively crappy cable, cost 16 quid I think. So it might not be a fair comparison.Certainly it's not so much worse, you would consider trading off the mobility. The cable compresses too so it's not like there is no compromise going tethered.
It's definitely good enough to stream games yes.
And one of these:

Just got one as well as the elite strap and battery and it's a much better and more comfortable fit now.
