Am I missing something here. If you own copies of original games, and the classic is a bit of a let down, why not just buy an original PS1?

My thoughts too. It'll probably be refurbed but so what. There's quite a few on ebay.

Well you could, but a PS3 would be better since it plays PS1 games and has HDMI output and wireless controllers. If you want to play an original PS1 on a modern TV it's a little more work as well, my 4k TV only has HDMI input, which means using either a really poor noisey Scart/Composite to HDMI convertor box or as I do if I want to play older consoles; a £300 upscaler.

For me personally it's the fact its brand new and stores all the games in the one box (with 20 ready to play). I had two original PlayStations and both died due to laser issues. Plus discs get scratched with use. I wouldn't buy one second hand.

Also they are very compact and have hdmi for simple connectability to modern TVs.

Same reasons that any of these retro machines are popular I think. I've not found the Classic to be a let down - quite the opposite but I guess it depends on what you are looking for in buying one. smile

That's interesting. Didn't realise you could store games on it. Can you also save game progress?

You can’t, from what I’ve read. A huge mistake imho, could have been a nice little money spinner if they had. You’re stuck with the tiny library of 20 games - until someone cracks it.

I have an original PS1 but the CD spindle is a bit flaky. But I can play my original discs using OpenEMU on a 6yr old Mac Mini with the SuperDrive. PS4 DualShock controller connected via Bluetooth gives you all the control options you need.

Yes you can. When you close the game (via the reset button on the console) it asks if you want to save your position in the game. It also has a virtual memory card (I think, I haven't tried it, but I have come across the memory card slots, more by my accident than a really looking for them).

Worth a look if you are interested. The hack has also advanced now as well so that two player games can be used via a USB hub apparently if you load your games onto a memory stick.

Some of the guys on YouTube have got about 50 games on their carosel now.

I'm warming to it. Certainly no use unless I can play the original Doom.

I won one of these in a raffle yesterday. I’d be gutted if I paid 90 quid for it but it’s ok for a bit of nostalgia.

Coincidentally I bought a SNES classic last week and it’s rarely been off, so good to play A Link to the Past and Metroid again.

I bought myself one and I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the game play.

Certain games are OK but some are impossibly laggy, Ridge Racer, Destruction Derby and Cool Boarders are practically unplayable unless you plan ahead for each turn/braking point/jump. GTA isn't much better. Rayman, Abe's and Tekken are all pretty good, there's no real issues there and they're still alright to play. The best of the bunch is MGS though, it's still very good, no control issues to speak of.

The fact I've paid £90 for one game is a bit of a shame though really.

God I loved Toca. What a game, seemed so real, the straight cut box whine, had it all.

Caved in and ordered one for £42.50 using the eBay code. The hack makes it far more attractive and hopefully workarounds can be found for the poor performance on some games.

Mine arrived today, My Vita and Wii have retroarch etc on so I didn't really need this, but you know how it is smile

If they knock 50% off the NeoGeo I'll get that too!

I have one going spare. I used it for a weekend and then boxed up again so it’s surplus to requirements. If anyone fancies it then PM me.

Anyone managed to get a load more games on theirs yet? I’ve found a plug and play solution which has all the old greats on it, about 250 games in total.
