For me, The Return of the Obra Dinn is my GOTY, snuck up on me and really impressed
.
Agreed, 15 minutes in and I almost ditched it. I was intrigued after an hour. Two or three consecutive nights and I just had to finish it. Proper original gameplay, clever graphics and a memorable soundtrack. .

Got bored of Red Dead 2 a month ago, despite it being so very advanced it’s totally dull. Getting Forza Horizon 4 for Christmas, so I guess that, as it’s the only other new release I would have played this year.
Forza Horizon 4 is a poor effort by the series standards. It feels more tired and contrived than ever. By the way, you can get it for free on Xbox Games Pass and play it to your heart's content. I wouldn't bother buying it.Tricky, as I have not played any newly released games this year, but I have enjoyed Forza Motorsport 7, Battlefield One, PUBG and various other things (mostly free on Games with Gold).
But the one that springs most readily to mind is Dante's Inferno. It is exceptionally mature in its content and so not for everyone, but there is something about the story line and the mechanics of the game that is compelling. It's quite old now (360 era) so it doesn't look spectacular, but the design and artistry make up for that. It just feels like a flawed gem.

I bought Dante's Inferno when it came out on the 360 and I have it on my One X hard drive waiting to play again. I loved it and it was one of those great B-tier games that we used to get that were brilliant titles without AAA aspiration. They're a kind of game sadly missed these days (Dark Sector was another one of these). But the one that springs most readily to mind is Dante's Inferno. The bit in Dante's Inferno where you walk across the bridge to the gates of Dis and the camera zooms right out to give a sense of scale is pretty amazing and has stuck with me.

RDR2. It's a masterpiece.
+1Horizon 4 is great but RDR2 blows everything else away.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Single player medieval RPG. Good storey and really good game play. It has a nice touch of realism about it. All the locations in the game are real places and it has a real historical setting. The graphics and voice acting are very good which helps immerse you in the storey.
It's half price in the Steam sale at the moment.
I came here to suggest the same game, it's the only one this year that has hooked me in; the few other games I've invested time in this year don't come close to this one.Single player medieval RPG. I thought this years games where pretty un-inspiring, no amazing ones really unlike last years Uncharted (still my favourite).
Horizon Zero Dawn I thought was dull, but did look amazing on 4K TV using PS4 Pro.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider was OK.
Forza Horizon 3 and then 4 have been my main games so far this year.

Bolded above is why I think you didn't see what the game has to give. It is quite slow to begin with, before you are given all of the game's mechanics to work with, the interesting story lines. It's worth giving some time to let it develop. It takes 5-6 hours for it to get more interesting, and involved, FWIW.

yeah I probably actually played a couple hours, up until i had to rescue some tart from some soldiers on horse or something, combat I felt slightly useless (as expected) .
Very minor spoiler below. You don't have to rescue her, you can just run away! Or you can distract the guards, which gives her the opportunity to escape. You won't be able to fight those soldiers. Little tip, when you are on horseback you have to double tap shift and hold it down, whilst holding down W to gallop at full speed.
