Anthem is a 3rd-person-shooter and action-RPG from Bioware, creators of Knight of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

Yes, Mass Effect Andromeda wasn't great, but that was essentially farmed out to a newly founded, inexperienced secondary wing of the studio, whereas Anthem's Project Lead and new Studio Head is Casey Hudson, one of the original executive producers for the Mass Effect Trilogy. Say what you will about the final moments of Mass Effect 3, but 99% of that trilogy was utterly enthralling and I'm very much looking forward to this.

For those of us who enjoy nothing more than a looter shooters, for anyone who enjoyed Destiny, The Division, Warframe, or even the likes of Diablo, this looks worth keeping a close eye on.

If anyone is considering pre-ordering, ShopTo have the game for PS4 and Xbox One for the very generous price £32.85. It'll show as £40ish quid until you add it to your basket. (credit Eurogamer)

I have an interest in Anthem but having spent many hours on The Division and im a fan ill most likely leave it, unless it gets outstanding reviews.

I say that as Division 2 is out in March and both games will require a massive time investment. Just like The Division and Destiny did. Its a shame they are released so close. Oh and Anthem is EA.

EA, Ubisoft and Activision are virtually indistinguishable as far as bad business practices go at this point.

I'm keeping an eye on Anthem as I'm a fan of Bioware, can't help feeling like it's not the type of game they should be making though.

I'm looking forward to giving the demo a go. The footage released so far looks terrible - slow paced and very easy.

I think that'll be the problem. The combat in destiny is brilliant so it doesn't really matter that the story and progression is a bit boring/grindy as it's fun to just run around and blow stuff up.

This looks like the combat in Mass Effect which is a chore at best, you only stick with it because you want to progress the story. Getting characters that you care about into this kind of game is incredibly hard.

Sort of looking forward to Anthem and they have said of the paid items have no paytowin aspect or pay to get end game quicker!

Got into playing Warframe some how missed it and been revamped not quite single player but can be played single player and free to play and all paid item just gets you to end game quicker!

Full disclosure; I adore sci-fi shooters, hence Mass Effect being one of my favourite gaming experiences in the last... well, ever really. I've also played literally thousands of hours of Destiny and Destiny 2, but the appeal of that series long-term is largely social and as my regular crew have reached max light (or whatever other arbitrary goal they set themselves) and started to drift away from the game again, my own interest has waned.

I played a reasonable amount of the Division (50-60 hours) and my biggest concern with the sequel is that it looks so similar that you'd struggle to tell it was a sequel. Granted, that's based on zero hours spent playing it, but it certainly didn't do much to really whet my appetite.

And I do very much enjoy Warframe, I've been playing on and off for two and a bit years, but I find it a game I tend to dip back into for a few weeks then put down again for months at a time.

These games are mentioned only because they're the yardstick I use to judge others, I didn't necessarily mean to make a direct comparison between them!

I'm the opposite, at least if you had to choose between a plot and options for replayability, I would always pick the latter.

You only live the story once or twice but making the game fun to play for 1000 hours ie. the grind is more important to me.

RDR2 is an amazing experience but once you've completed the story it suddenly becomes very empty, for example.

Plot and gameplay are two sides of the same coin as far as I'm concerned. Destiny is my most played game ever, but it's played like a hobby in its own right and only a handful of those 2000 or so hours were truly memorable. In twenty years time I don't know how much of it I'll recall. Mass Effect though? Knights of the Old Republic? Finding Ciri in The Witcher 3? Story moments are what makes those things truly memorable, and I honestly think I'll remember all those for the rest of my life.

However, those story moments are one and done. They leave an impression, but they don't keep you playing past the one-hundred, two-hundred, five-hundred hour mark. Solid basic gameplay is what does that.

Lots of mentions of Diablo and a few other looter shooters there.

After the abortion that was ME Andromeda surely Bioware are due a good one?

Story and gameplay can be combined, I like the way the Destiny campaign has a story but completing it leads you on to whole other way of playing it. The fact that the gunplay is also very satisfying also helps.

I am intrigued by Anthem as Bioware don't make too many duds and it's a Sci-Fi shooter which I usually love but the gunplay does look a little bit clunky from what I've seen so far. I just hope it's fun to play and has enough content to get your teeth into. Destiny 2 was very light initially in that regard and lost me early doors.

Or they're following the usual EA studio path, game that "didn't meet expectations", moved into a project that doesn't really suit them as a studio, game is not very good, studio is closed.

It'll be sad to see but I wouldn't be surprised.

The Bioware we know and love died a long, long time ago IMO.

I'm not holding out much hope for Anthem - it looks amazing, graphically, but the gameplay seems to be the same old generic flashy FPS. Lots of effects, lots of big guns, but no real substance to the combat other than mashing various keys.

TBH I found the same with Destiny. I'm finding myself increasingly preferring cover shooters, adding the extra elements of LoS, suppressive fire, etc, just seems to add a bit extra depth.

So it could basically be Mass Effect Online, that might actually be pretty cool tbh. I always felt the control over your AI teammates in the ME games was a bit clunky, this would eliminate that. They will need to have made the shooting controls a bit tighter though, some of the shooting in ME is a bit hit and miss (no pun intended)

If it comes down to a choice between Anthem and Division 2, it'll be Division for me. I prefer the real world setting, the shooting and the cover mechanics. I put many hundreds of hours into the first Division, created multiple characters and pretty maxed out 2 of them. Anthem somehow hasn't really appealed to me yet - it all looks a bit 'arcadey'

It will have to be exceptionally good for me to even consider it. I certainly won't pre-order.

Conversely I was quite hyped for Division but then never really got on with it. I found it a bit dull and it got very samey.

Yep agreed but games like Destiny and Diablo 3 made grinding for loot quite fun whereas Division never really gave me that get one more piece\level addiction as I didn't really get on with the game mechanics although I do know some people loved it.

Proof will be in the pudding, I'm keen to try the Anthem demo, I'll pretty much know within 10 minutes whether I'm going to like it or not, it's all about the gunplay. shoot

Division endgame was far, far better and more satisfying towards the end of the game's lifecycle than it was at the beginning. The campaign though, remains one of The best I have played in any game to date.

Agree its all about gun play.

Destiny has great gun play and can't really fault it.

The Division is slightly trickier but forgiving enough. For a 3rd person shooter its rather excellent.

I wonder if the crew behind the Call of duties have a loot based/Grind game in the making? I think the gun play on COD is superb even if the games have lost their appeal.

Which is why the gun-play is important as if just playing the game is fun then it doesn't really matter who you are fighting to a degree. Plus they usually add new content and change up the encounters on a weekly basis so it doesn't get too stale, oh and Co-Operative RAIDS, probably the most fun part of the end game, at least on Destiny.

However for Division I never really got on with the gun-play so the end game became boring for me quite quickly. It's all about the gun-play. It needs to be slick and satisfying or the rest of the game won't really matter.
