Now then compadres.

My mate and I want to set up with a gaming machine and both
being car loons in the early to mid 60s will be doing mostly driving stuff.

In the past, I've used CMR on PC with a very simple wheel/pedals
set but things have moved on and I'm thinking about a dedicated games kit
for use with a flatscreen.

Given I know seven times the sqaure root of Foxtrot Alpha about this gear, it
seems ot me that meeting the followng crteria would be best...

1: Cheap: hardware wrested from the penniless hands of spotty youths.

2: Reliable: and ready to go without the need for a Phd in anything.

3: Force wheel: Of some sort, I hear they're good at adding realism.

4: Non habit-forming.

So what's the griff?

PS4 with a Thrustmaster T300RS wheel and a playseat challenge foldaway seat.

Get a copy of Assetto Corsa and Gran Turismo Sport.

Sorted!

Tight budget?

PS2 + GT4 + a force feedback wheel (used from Cex?)

That's my setup in the lounge.

Thanks!

'Tight budget?' Unfeasibly.

It's looking good so all I need to know now is this...

Is a PS2 setup good or should I be looking at 2+?

Cx or eBay?

PS3s in Cex are from about £40. Get the slightly uprated slim model with the DVD slot at the front. The original versions seem to have heating issues.

You could pick up a used wheel on Ebay or from Cex for about £50 - I have the Logitech Driving Force GT (I'm sure the G29 etc are better but for the money I'm not complaining about this wheel). The GT5 game is about £3. That's all you really need if you want to enjoy virtual driving on the cheap.

GT5 has both the Top Gear test track and the Nordschleife. You can no longer race online, though.

That's great, Hoofy, thanks very much.

It looks like the TOCA game might also be a must and I'll be on the lookout for CMR as well.

Watch this space...

For PS2, I wasn't that bothered by Toca (Race Driver). Certainly CMR on PS2 is good (am going through that again at the moment); if you get a PS3, then Colin McRae Dirt is worth checking out. Liking the rally cross stuff and the Paris-Dakar trucks. Particularly enjoyed one track where I launched into the air and landed on top of the truck in front of me who was in second place, driving over him and landing in first place to continue the race. biggrin

Gripping! I just found out that the son of a friend's friend is panicking to get an Xbox
and will probably want to sell his month-old 1Tb PS3. Looks promising!

That will most likely be a PS4 I'd have thought.

I expect so from its age but does it make a big difference?

It's not going to be very "budget".

Xboxs are dirt cheap nowadays. Get one of those with Forza, Horizon, Asseto or Project Cars.
Retro gaming is just that, retro. Games move on for a reason, they are a lot better.

Huge difference. The PS4 is streets ahead of the PS3 in every way.

You're not going to get much enjoyment out of an archaic PS2, so get a PS3 or PS4. Even a base Xbox One is cheap now.

Why not? I have both a PS2 and PS3, and for car games, the PS2 isn't bad.

Hmmm. What's archaic to some is new territory for me. Besides, I don't intend to become
a gaming geek/nut. I'm just after a pastime/laff until the weather's fit to start fixing real cars
again wink

Just get a cheapo PS2 and GT4 plus a reasonable wheel with pedals.

Have done, kind of. I found a PS3 on the local buy 'n' sell and just returned home, with a carrier bagful.
It came with cables, a hand controller thingy and some discs, inc. LA Noir, Call of Duty MM3 and
a Blu ray disc of Beauty & The Beast. The box says CECH J03 on the back (released'07, according to some web site)
and the ad says the console runs well and is quiet.

I gave £25 for this and I'm on the look out for the right peripherals.

I'll be playing nicely before long.

biggrin Sounds like a good deal. Now get GT5 and a budget Logitech wheel from CEX (don't need the best if you're trying not to spend too much) or ebay. I picked up a Logitech Driving Force wheel and frame for £50 on ebay.
