Disagree with that assessment. They’ve killed off creating first-party games, that’s all. They’ll move to a licensing model, eventually the tech will be subsumed into something else, and someone will update the misleading google graveyard website smile

ETA of course, third-party developers will definitely now stop thinking about developing & porting games for Stadia because there’s no compelling reason for gamers to use the platform (AAA titles drive people to platforms), so there’s a smaller potential revenue stream for the developers, and the death spiral will tighten further. But *everyone* could see that coming.

They never did create any first-party cgames, and it was hugely ambitious of them to think they could, given how long it usually takes to gestate a single decent game.

They hadn’t released any, but they were developing them.

I know, but they weren't ready for release, and there's no way they would have been after such a short period of time.

Google have track record of ruthlessly killing off stuff that they feel is not performing well or going to be profitable enough.

It came back to bite them with Stadia - most people who know Google's history were very reluctant to buy in and the model of 'buy your (very restricted selection of) games at full price from us, that can only run via streaming on this service' was rubbish for the consumer anyway.

Services that let you run your 'own' games that you purchased from a digital store in a virtual PC are a much better idea - or ones that basically give you access to a wide variety of games in return for a subscription also make some sense.

The fact that they still don't officially support their own STB hardware yet is just ludicrous. A totally poorly executed flop.

Stadia is unaffected by the recent news.

AWS is the market leader, but Azure is coming up strong, as Microsofts business offerings are unrivalled.

So how do Google go from 3rd to second.

So apparently if I can run Xbox live using my phone using Samsung DEX.....

https://youtu.be/MI1nptc6dCg

I don't have a Xbox live account, but DEX does run fine, for photo editing/word and even Carmageddon - wirelessly.

So what happens if I try to Cyberpunk via Stadia. To confirm this is Cyberpunk running on a Google server, sent to my router, than to my phone, than to my TV, with information than needing to go back the otherway.

Well it works, its not pretty, not quick (around 1/4 second lag), but the phone told me to expect lag and asked me to connect wired if possible. So if I got a USB C hub for the TV, with ethernet/power/HDMI connection than in theory my phone can essentially act as a gaming hub, inaddtion to all the other stuff it does. Need to think about how all this can work interms of actual work work to replace my laptop when the time comes, but this tech really is mad.

True - it's still a service with a small selection games and a really unappealing model of users paying full price to buy games that can only run on the service. No chance of any exclusive first-party software in the future now of course, but that was a pipe dream really. They weren't going to be able to develop anything compelling in-house.

They could switch up to a more appealing business model of course but that would probably need quite a bit more investment on the back end which AFAIK is currently based on Linux as the host OS for their games.

Pay X amount per month, get a basket of games to play for your sub. Like the Luna model is slated to be or XCloud/Gamepass actually is. Also PS Now does that.

I quite like the GeForce Now model of hosting your existing games on their servers but that has been compromised by some publishers attitudes.

Going to sideload Stadia onto Google Chromecast with Google TV tonight, I did sideload it the other day but couldn't find a way to press get started, turns out can use a Bluetooth mouse.

I sideloaded Stadia again on Google Chromecast with Google TV, used an app on Pixel 4 XL which acted as a bluetooth mouse and managed to get logged in. Had to hardware reset the Stadia controller as it wouldn't connect but its all connected and working now. Played Cyberpunk 2077 for about 2 hours and it worked fine.

I've finally completed FarCry 5....talk about depressive endings almost as bad as Spec Ops.

Now starting to get into Assassins Creed, even without paying for 4k and HDR streaming on a 4K OLED panel it looks fabulous!

Hopefully by the time am done with it Cyberpunk will be updated and more balanced - I stopped playing it when even at early/mid game I could literally run through a level without even using any gun by hacking everyone.

Also waiting for Hitman 3 to go sale sometime later this year before 'buying' it.
