They will fold, they have form.
Games are crazy prices again. I also still struggle to understand why delivery of a digital asset is more costly than manufacturing physical discs when you take into the overheads.
We know the big boys infrastructure gets squeezed on new releases but they can choose to scale that to meet demands and have thousands of consoles download a title from the stores at a time and I presume their networks load balancing capabilities will protect things to a degree.
That being said I just read something on Reddit where someone on a 900mb fibre connection was getting 3mb/s due to load. Amazon could deliver a physics game quicker if it had stock !
I’ll probably only buy the digital PS5. I don’t really have much I go back to on disc other than GTA V and FC5.
I doubt stick will be available this year though, between component shortages, brexit, HGV driver shortages and back orders. I do suspect the market will be flooded with overpriced units by those who have got them and will hold them until Christmas.

If Sony/MS sold games on their own digital stores cheaper than retail outlets, it would absolutely cripple their distribution network. If games were 10-20% cheaper on digital stores, it would cause a monumental drop in physical sales, retailers would lose out significantly, thus making them less inclined to sell the consoles of the manufacturers that are cutting them out of game sales. Digital will NEVER be cheaper, with the occasional exceptions of low volume release titles, sales or similar.

I can see a reverse ferret on Horizon Forbidden West, it’s not like they haven’t got time

Very valid points there mate. I hadn’t thought of it that way, rather selfishly. On network resources though I’m not sure it would cripple their infrastructure and arguably shouldn’t in the days of infinitely scalable cloud resources.
The crux here of course that the costs will rise as you do just use up more of someone else’s computer and the impact of that couldn’t be passed onto the customer to account for burst resources at launch time etc.
Will the rise in sales of digital only consoles push other retailers out?

If PlayStation had their way, all consoles would be digital only. This would (a) lock consumers into a walled garden and (b) stop the 2nd hand games market and (c) be cheaper to manufacture. It’ll not happen for years, of course, until we’re all subscribing to content rather than buying outright, but if you look at the opportunity markets (eg China, Russia, great lumps of Africa) there are already titles that just don’t have a physical release, mainly for manufacture and distribution cost reasons (so they say, though I refer you to my point (b) up there ^^)It's interesting how this will develop, if Sony & Microsoft eventually go digital only, perhaps by subscription such as Game Pass etc, then they can charge what they want. Digital releases might get too expensive, with subscription being the only logical way. If subscription prices get too high, there will always be folk willing to still pay, and parents treating their kids etc.

There's still plenty of competition and bargains in the PC 'digital download' space ... I've got games at great prices from the likes of Green Man Gaming, Eneba, Gamesplanet. CDkeys etc (I typically go for Steam keys). Plus the big stores (Steam, GOG, Epic) compete against each other and frequently throw some fantastic sales.I don't think I've paid anything close to full price for a PC game for the last five years - the most I spent was 27 quid for Half Life Alyx which was well worth it. Mostly I'm paying around a tenner or less .. often a lot less. And then there are things like Humble Bundles which can have some cracking bargains if you pay maybe 20 quid for everything in the offer.
Far Cry looks like the same old thing they've been peddling since Far Cry 3 and suffering from the same problem as every other Ubisoft open world game where they get padded to hell with generic filler missions across a huge map.
Now Deathloop on the other hand which is out next Tuesday looks much more interesting and I can't wait to start unraveling that mystery.

Anyone bothering with Far Cry 6? Reckon I'll give it a go but not at release, I'll wait a while first, just incase it's crap.
.
I have it on Pre-Order. 99% certain it will be the same as all the previous ones, but I still get enough out of them to enjoy it (apart from the "extra scenes" they always have to throw in). Quite happy mooching about killing all the bad guys...... Looks like a few more weapons to play with.....

Has anyone played Overwatch on PS5? I just want to upgrade from the PC game to the PS. Will it be possible to do that? Or will I have to download the account all over again. Or will it be possible to promote it somehow ? I heard that there are sites like overboost

On PC sure, but on console your choice is pay their prices or go without. On several occasions I've found it cheaper to buy a physical copy from Asia and have it shipped around the world rather than buy it digitally, which is a crazy situation.
Sites like cdkeys have PS and Xbox codes too ... not as much choice as for the PC but still some bargains:https://www.cdkeys.com/playstation-network-psn?pro...

I'm highly suspicious of Stock Informer.
You get a telegram notification but the currys site is displaying a message "we are not selling PS5's today"
